Warning: SPOILERS For Star Trek: Starfleet Academy‘s Series Premiere – “Kids These Days”
As a huge Star Trek fan, I was so excited to see Captain Janeway’s legacy continuing in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! It’s amazing to think her influence is still felt 800 years after the events of Voyager. The new series, brought to us by Alex Kurtzman and creator Gaia Violo, kicks off with an episode called “Kids These Days” and brings Starfleet Academy back to its original home in San Francisco. I can’t wait to see what adventures await the new cadets!
In the debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) guides the USS Athena and its crew of young cadets safely back to Earth. But first, they must endure an attack from Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) and the Venari Ral. Like a classic Star Trek story, the cadets at Starfleet Academy pool their skills and teamwork to defeat Nus Braka.
Captain Ake has just become the new head of Starfleet Academy, immediately bringing a fresh wave of enthusiasm. The USS Athena also honors legendary figures from Starfleet history, featuring places like the James T. Kirk Pavilion and the Sato Atrium, which is named after Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) from Star Trek: Enterprise.
Interestingly, Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager makes a brief, surprise appearance in the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Has A Captain Janeway Quote Cameo
Jörg Hillebrand, a researcher on Star Trek: Picard season 3, noticed a familiar quote from Captain Kathryn Janeway in the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The quote appears on wall screens during the attack on the USS Athena, as Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard) looks on. You can see it below.

Captain Janeway first spoke this well-known line to Naomi Wildman in the two-part episode “Dark Frontier” during the fifth season of Star Trek: Voyager. Later, as Admiral Janeway, she reflected on the quote again in the two-part episode “The Devourer of All Things” from the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy.
It was perfect timing that Genesis recognized a quote from Captain Janeway. This likely gave the young Dar-Sha cadet the confidence to lead her classmates and drive forward Caleb Mir’s (Sandro Rosta) plan to rescue the USS Athena from the trap created by Nus Braka’s programmable matter. As the daughter of a Starfleet Admiral, Genesis dreams of becoming a captain just like Janeway.
Set roughly 800 years after the events of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place in the late 32nd century. Though many years have passed, Captain Janeway remains a celebrated figure. In fact, a new version of her ship, the USS Voyager-J, is still actively serving in the galaxy, ensuring her ship’s legacy continues.
The Doctor Brings More Star Trek: Voyager Callbacks To Starfleet Academy
Robert Picardo reprises his role as The Doctor in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, connecting the new series to Star Trek: Voyager. He’s the most significant returning character from previous Star Trek shows, bridging the gap between the 24th and 32nd centuries.
Thanks to the Doctor’s incredibly detailed, 800-year-old memory, fans like Jörg Hillebrand continue to find hidden references, or “Easter eggs,” to Star Trek: Voyager. One recent discovery is a funny nod to the very first episode of Voyager, called “Caretaker.”

In the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Dr. McCoy’s diagnosis of Orillian lung maggots affecting Caleb Mir is a nod to a similar situation involving Neelix (played by Ethan Phillips) in Star Trek: Voyager, specifically season 3, episode 13, titled “Fair Trade.”

Following the conclusion of Star Trek: Voyager, The Doctor enrolled at Starfleet Academy and was tasked by Admiral Janeway with guiding the teenage crew of the USS Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy’s second season. He seemed particularly surprised when SAM mentioned Captain Gwyndala and her friends.
In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Admiral Janeway’s name appears on the ship’s Wall of Heroes. It’s a wonderful tribute to the first female captain of a Star Trek TV show, and she continues to be a role model for new cadets. Fittingly, the current cadets are now led by Captain Nahla Ake, the latest woman to command her own Star Trek series.
