Marcello Hernández quickly became a standout performer after joining Saturday Night Live in 2022. He’s known for appearing in memorable sketches and for his recurring character, Domingo. Now, as his popularity rises, Hernández has released a comedy special on Netflix. Before filming it, he received helpful advice from comedy icon Chris Rock.
I was so excited to finally watch Marcello Hernández: American Boy when it dropped this month! It’s his first ever filmed comedy special, which is huge, especially since he’s been getting so much attention on SNL. I recently saw him on The Today Show talking about making it, and they asked about advice he got from Chris Rock. Apparently, he spoke to Chris right before filming, and Rock gave him some really insightful warnings that actually made him change things up. It was fascinating to hear!
I explained to him that I was filming a special, and he immediately asked when. I told him it would be in a few weeks, and he pointed out I had just finished working on SNL. He strongly advised against rushing into it, saying I could easily handle something more spontaneous and that this was a crucial opportunity for me. After that conversation, I contacted my agents and my mother to tell them we needed to postpone the special, because Chris Rock had convinced me it wasn’t the right time. We ended up rescheduling it.
Chris Rock’s main suggestion to Hernández was to rehearse his material more before filming his special, which makes a lot of sense. Hernández had just finished his time on Saturday Night Live, and quickly switching to a new performance could have actually hurt his routine. It’s advice only a veteran comedian – especially one familiar with the pressure of Studio 8H – would likely give.
Chris Rock was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1993 and is still strongly associated with the show. He’s also hosted SNL four times since then, and made an appearance for the show’s 50th anniversary special. Reports suggest that creator Lorne Michaels paid a significant amount to get Rock and other big names to participate in the celebration.
Marcello Hernández is becoming increasingly well-known, and it’s not just from his popular skits with Sabrina Carpenter. He’s landing more and more roles, including a major part as Fergus in Shrek 5. He also appears in the Netflix film 72 Hours alongside Kevin Hart, and The Angry Birds Movie 3. In 2025, he was also in the highly anticipated Happy Gilmore 2.
Hernández is quickly gaining momentum in his career, with several movie roles and a recently released comedy special. It’s exciting to see where he goes from here, and it was great of Chris Rock to support another comedian.
You can now watch Marcello Hernández’s comedy special, Marcello Hernández: American Boy, on Netflix. He’s also a featured performer on Saturday Night Live, which airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC.
