‘Looney Tunes’ Spin-off Movie on the Way That Hopefully Fares Better Than ‘Coyote vs. Acme’

Even with the troubles surrounding the Coyote vs. Acme film, the Looney Tunes franchise is staying fresh by exploring new ideas, including a movie focused solely on Speedy Gonzales. According to The Hollywood Reporter, animator Jorge R. Gutiérrez is officially directing the project, something he hinted at on social media recently. Last month, he posted a photo on Instagram wearing a Speedy Gonzales shirt and holding a figurine of the character, asking followers to guess what he might be developing at Warner Brothers Animation.

While the story isn’t available yet, Speedy Gonzales, the quick-witted mouse, has been a popular character in the Looney Tunes universe since the 1950s. Most recently, Gabriel Iglesias voiced Speedy in the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy, and Fred Armisen, Tim Dadabo, and Dino Andrade have all played the role at different times. Bill Damaschke, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, recently spoke about the new movie, saying:

Jorge is a remarkably talented storyteller. He brings a unique artistic vision and cultural understanding to everything he does, making even familiar stories feel fresh and classic. We’re thrilled he’s updating Speedy Gonzales, a favorite Looney Tunes character, for viewers around the world today.

It’s been ten years since plans for a Speedy Gonzales movie first surfaced. Eugenio Derbez was chosen to star in 2016, but the project was ultimately canceled, reportedly due to concerns about potentially offensive content. Derbez later explained to United Press International that the character is beloved in Mexico, where he’s seen as a clever, heroic figure who helps his community. Derbez highlighted that Speedy is admired for his intelligence and ability to outsmart his opponents. This likely explains why the new project is being described as a modern update for audiences worldwide.

What’s Going on with ‘Coyote vs. Acme’?

Warner Bros.

Just seven months before its long-awaited release, the film Coyote vs. Acme is finally coming to theaters. Warner Bros. Discovery had previously put the film on hold for over two years as part of a financial strategy. The movie, starring John Cena, Will Forte, and Luis Guzmán, is a live-action/animated hybrid that tells the story of Wile E. Coyote suing the Acme Corporation because their products never work as expected in his attempts to catch the Road Runner. The film follows Wile E. and his lawyer, Kevin Avery, as they face off against Acme’s determined Buddy Crane in court.

I’m so excited! After years of waiting, Coyote vs. Acme is finally coming out on August 28th. It’s all thanks to Ketchup Entertainment stepping in and getting the movie finished – I heard they paid around $50 million for it, which is amazing!
