With the 2013 launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft jumped into a very competitive market for gaming consoles. Competing with Sony’s PlayStation 4 and, later, Nintendo’s Switch, Xbox changed its approach. Instead of just focusing on the console itself, Microsoft aimed to create a connected gaming world, bringing together consoles, PCs, and online services into one unified experience.
Microsoft produced some of its best exclusive games during the Xbox One generation. The Forza Horizon series became a leading racing franchise, the Halo: The Master Chief Collection protected the series’ history, and Gears 5 modernized the classic cover-based shooter gameplay. Alongside these successes, hugely popular multi-platform games like Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3, GTA V, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare became defining experiences for gamers, shaping how they enjoyed open-world adventures and online competition.
The console also became a hub for online communities and services. Games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Sea of Thieves, and Destiny 2 created lasting social experiences through their shared online worlds, and Xbox Game Pass changed the way people found and played new games.
As a long-time Xbox fan, I think the games on the Xbox One really show how much things changed with this generation. We went from big, self-contained adventures to games that just kept going, constantly offering new stuff and experiences. It felt like these games weren’t just titles, but whole worlds you could jump into and stay with for years!
What it’s about: A small child falls into the Underground, where monsters have long been banished by humans and are hunting every human that they find. The player controls the child as they try to make it back to the Surface through hostile environments, all the while engaging with a turn-based combat system with puzzle-solving and bullet hell elements, as well as other unconventional game mechanics.

What it’s about: Elden Ring is an action RPG developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, released in February 2022. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, with world-building contributions from novelist George R. R. Martin, the game features an expansive open world called the Lands Between. Players assume the role of a customisable character known as the Tarnished, who must explore this world, battle formidable enemies, and seek to restore the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord.
The game builds on the challenging gameplay mechanics familiar from the Dark Souls series but introduces a more open-ended structure with vast exploration, dynamic weather, and a day-night cycle. It offers deep lore, complex characters, and an interconnected world filled with secrets, dungeons, and powerful bosses.
