Popular YouTuber PewDiePie recently visited WIT Studio, the animation company known for hits like Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, and got to create artwork with their professional animators.
In 2024, Swedish YouTuber Felix Kjellberg, known as PewDiePie, gained a lot of attention online after documenting his month-long journey of learning to draw. Viewers were amazed by how quickly he improved – it was both surprising and impressive! His progress caught the eye of a well-known animation studio in Japan.
WIT Studio is a well-known animation studio, especially among anime fans. They’re famous for creating the first three seasons of Attack on Titan before another studio, MAPPA, took over in 2020. Besides Attack on Titan, they’ve also produced popular series like Ranking of Kings, Vinland Saga, and The Ancient Magus Bride, and have many other impressive projects under their belt.
WIT Studio is famous for its clear, polished artwork and smooth animation. PewDiePie (Kjellberg) saw this quality up close when he visited their studio in Tokyo, Japan. They’d invited him via email for a unique opportunity: to tour the studio and collaborate with their artists.
The YouTuber confessed he was really intimidated by the challenge and almost quit because of the pressure. However, he ultimately decided to go for it and fully committed to learning professional animation.
To start, PewDiePie participated in a fun warm-up with the animators, where they quickly sketched each other – some drawings took just 30 seconds, while others took up to three minutes. PewDiePie even posed as a subject, and then he compared his own sketches to the professionals’, receiving advice on things like drawing larger and simplifying lines.

He later animated a short clip of someone jumping from a box and also contributed to the famous fight scenes in Attack on Titan by creating the transitional frames in between the key animations.
In animation, ‘in-betweens’ are the subtle movements that connect the main poses. Animators create these by carefully tracing over the key poses and making tiny adjustments to ensure smooth, natural motion – something PewDiePie recently found to be much harder than it looks.
“This is proving to be more challenging than I expected,” the influencer said. “However, it was amazing to see the original, unedited photos and how fantastic they turned out.”
I already knew making anime was a lot of work, but actually trying it myself gave me a much deeper appreciation. I’m even more impressed now than I was before.
As a farewell present, the animators gave him Attack on Titan goodies, including a special drawing of him reimagined as a Scout in the show’s unique art style.
PewDiePie’s visit to the WIT Studio highlighted just how difficult it is to create anime. It makes you realize why some shows have issues, particularly when production is hurried. (We’re thinking of One Punch Man, in particular.)
