As Kathleen Kennedy prepares to leave her role at Lucasfilm, she’s clarified the future of Star Wars, confirming that a new trilogy is in development. She shared new details about this project, which has been kept mostly secret until now.
Kathleen Kennedy confirms Simon Kinberg’s long-speculated Star Wars trilogy
Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Simon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy. She told Deadline they reviewed his initial script in August and thought it showed promise, but wasn’t quite ready yet.
She explained that after the initial story, Lucasfilm and Kinberg completely revised it, putting a lot of work into a new version. They finished a detailed outline – around 70 pages long – just four weeks ago, and they expect to receive a full draft in March.
Kennedy has confirmed that Simon Kinberg’s planned trilogy is now more than just an idea. She said the detailed outline shows the project is making real progress. Kinberg has worked with Lucasfilm before on Star Wars Rebels, and there’s been a lot of discussion about him potentially creating a new Star Wars story.
Kennedy also mentioned Lucasfilm’s future plans, including the possibility of more films and spin-offs. When asked about them, she confirmed that the trilogy from Kinberg was part of those discussions and considered a confirmed project, though she didn’t offer any further specifics at the time.
She explained that Dave and Lynwen both support Simon’s plans for a new trilogy, which would likely extend the project well into the 2030s. That’s what they’re focusing on next.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m so excited to hear that the trilogy from David Kinberg is really happening! Apparently, he’s already finished a detailed outline of the story, and Lucasfilm is expecting the full script by March. What’s even cooler is that this trilogy will pick up after The Rise of Skywalker and won’t be connected to any of the other stuff they’re planning, like Starfighter or the movie about Rey. It’s a totally new direction, which I think is awesome!
