The next Sonic the Hedgehog movie, scheduled for release in March 2027, will feature a villain fans already know. Ben Schwartz will return as the voice of Sonic in this new adventure, which will also introduce popular characters like Amy Rose and Metal Sonic alongside some returning favorites.
A recent report suggests Jim Carrey might reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic 4 movie. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Paramount is in talks with Carrey about returning for the film.

Jim Carrey (63) had stepped away from acting after filming Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but he decided to come back for Sonic 3 because he enjoys playing the famous Sega villain.
After Dr. Robotnik’s third defeat in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, many people thought Jim Carrey wouldn’t return to the role. The movie showed Robotnik setting aside his rivalry with Sonic and even sacrificing himself to save the planet. However, it appears the villain is ready to return for a fourth film, continuing his role as the main antagonist in the Sonic series.
I’m really excited for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is scheduled to come out on March 19, 2027! We don’t know much about the story yet, but the end of Sonic 3 definitely hinted at some new faces. It’s now confirmed that Amy Rose, with her trusty hammer, and the robotic Metal Sonic will be joining the fun, and I can’t wait to see what they bring to the series!
How Will Dr. Robotnik Return in Sonic 4?

I’m really curious about how they’re going to bring Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik back for the next Sonic movie! I thought his character was supposed to have… well, not be alive anymore? It’s going to be interesting to see how they explain that!
In the final moments of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, Gerald, activates a powerful cannon designed to destroy the planet. Jim Carrey’s character, Dr. Robotnik, decides to stay with the collapsing weapon and fly it far away from Earth, ensuring it explodes safely in space. This act traps him on the doomed space station, and he is presumed to have died in the explosion.
If the character is truly dead, it’s puzzling how he could be the villain in Sonic 4. Sonic 3 ends right before we see him destroyed in the explosion, and it’s so obvious that it feels like a deliberate hint that he wasn’t actually defeated and could return later in the series.
If the buzz is correct and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is based on the story from the Sonic CD video game—which involves time travel—then it would explain why Dr. Robotnik is coming back.
The ending of Sonic 3 showed Sonic running through a forest and unexpectedly encountering a group of Metal Sonics and Amy Rose. Many fans believe this scene wasn’t just a regular run, but that Sonic actually traveled through time.
It’s possible Robotnik wasn’t destroyed when the Eclipse Cannon exploded, but was instead sent forward in time. In this new future, he may have created a plan to finally defeat Sonic and his friends, building the powerful Metal Sonic and conquering that alternate timeline.
Just when Robotnik’s plan was coming together, Sonic unexpectedly ripped through time and space, and found himself in Robotnik’s terrible, futuristic world.
This explains how Robotnik survived and how Metal Sonic was created, and it would also launch Sonic and his friends on a thrilling adventure through time.
