I Binge-Watched Netflix’s His & Hers, And I Have 3 Problems With The Big Twist

SPOILERS are ahead for His & Hers, now streaming with a Netflix subscription.

I enjoy a good twist in crime dramas, but the one in Netflix’s His & Hers didn’t really shock me. Maybe it’s just my opinion, but after watching the six-episode series, the final reveal felt more like a letdown than a mind-blowing moment. While I was surprised, some things still didn’t quite make sense.

The new series centers around Anna, a news anchor played by Tessa Thompson, and Jack, a detective played by Jon Bernthal, who reconnect when a murder occurs in their hometown. Critics and audiences (with a similar 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) have had mixed reactions, and it’s easy to see why. The ending is divisive – the identity of the killer is genuinely shocking. The reveal that Anna’s mother, Alice (played by Crystal Fox), was a serial killer responsible for the deaths of three of Anna’s high school classmates – motivated by discovering they were the ones who assaulted Anna when she was sixteen – feels unsatisfying, and here’s why.

Why Would 3 High School Girls Go That Far?

Having been a teenage girl myself and not always having an easy time with friendships, I understand that high school girls can have intense rivalries. However, I find it completely unbelievable that three girls would plan and watch their friend being sexually assaulted, even as they sang ‘Happy Birthday.’ For that to happen, all three would need to be deeply disturbed, and that level of cruelty just doesn’t seem realistic to me.

I understand it’s not a realistic crime story, but the plot twist felt very sudden and unexpected. If the show wanted me to believe it, it could have given more background on why these girls were so mean and what motivated them to intentionally upset Anna so deeply – it was a truly awful experience for her.

I probably wouldn’t have been so bothered if the supporting characters had been more developed. As it was, the big reveal felt like it was just meant to shock, and didn’t add much depth or sensitivity to the difficult topic of a teenage girl’s assault. While it does explain Anna’s mother’s actions, the reveal itself didn’t really resonate with me.

I Don’t Think The Character Of Catherine/Lexy Was Fleshed Out Enough

I also wasn’t satisfied with the plot twist surrounding Lexy, the news anchor who took Anna’s place. The finale reveals she’s actually Catherine, another classmate who was bullied and nearly involved in the same traumatic event. While meant to be a surprise suspect, I didn’t think this worked because Lexy wasn’t developed enough as a character. She ended up feeling like a distraction rather than a meaningful part of the story.

It’s easy to see why someone with a history of being bullied and who now goes by a different name might seem suspicious, but it’s hard to understand why she would want to hurt Anna. Anna wasn’t involved in the bullying, and she actually tried to escape a terrible situation where her friends were letting something awful happen to her. The final confrontation between Lexy and Anna just doesn’t feel logical, unless Lexy is completely unstable.

Honestly, I was a little let down by how abruptly they revealed her connection to everything. It felt really out of nowhere, because we hadn’t seen much of her throughout the series. And then, the reason Alice gave for trying to frame Catherine just didn’t quite land with me. Catherine ran away from the scene after the assault, and Alice acted like that was suspicious, instead of realizing she was likely terrified and another victim herself. It just felt…off.

Anna & Jack’s Reconciling Doesn’t Make Sense To Me

What bothered me most about how His & Hers ended was Anna and Jack reuniting. While Alice’s letter suggested she did the right thing by bringing them back together, especially since they’re having a baby, the show previously highlighted a lot of problematic behavior from Jack. He had an affair with Rachel, one of the women involved in Anna’s assault, and when Rachel was murdered by Alice, he covered it up and broke the law to avoid being implicated.

It seems pretty clear Alice realized the truck Rachel left in was Jack’s, right before she was killed. Why would Alice want them to reconcile, knowing Jack was involved with women from Anna’s awful friend group – including his own sister? I don’t see a good outcome for Anna in all of this.

I understand they shared a terrible experience and needed time apart, and it ultimately brought them closer. However, Jack never truly apologized for emotionally shutting down after they lost Charlotte. Considering how he handled Rachel’s death, he comes across as someone who might deceive and manipulate those he cares about. It’s hard to forget that he even asked his niece to help him cover up something earlier in the series!

I was pretty frustrated with the new mystery show on streaming, even though the acting was good and I watched it all quickly. I suspect the original book by Alice Feeney might have a stronger plot and more details, because the show felt a little incomplete. Now that you’ve finished His & Hers, you can see what Netflix has planned for 2026.
