After threatening legal action, a homeowner in Altadena, California successfully got a bear to leave from under his house. However, it appears the bear has now taken up residence at a neighboring property.
In December 2025, a California resident named Kenneth Johnson became an internet sensation when he shared the surprising news that a 550-pound black bear had been living under his house since Thanksgiving.
For weeks, he and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife attempted to resolve the issue, trying various methods to get rid of the animal, such as air horns, strong smells, and even paintball guns.
After repeated unsuccessful efforts, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife stopped trying to help, which frustrated Johnson and led to threats of a lawsuit alleging negligence and emotional suffering.
In January 2026, a bear rescue group called BEAR League finally coaxed the bear out of the crawlspace. They quickly and successfully removed the animal from its hiding spot.
Man, I was so glad when that bear finally left! It really messed up my gas line, causing a lot of damage. But honestly, it doesn’t seem like it even got the message – I’m worried it’ll be back!
Black bear spotted under a second Altadena home after ‘eviction’
KTLA News reported on January 13th that a second black bear has been discovered living under a house in Altadena, just a short distance – less than half a mile – from the previous sighting reported by Johnson.
The homeowner told us the bear had been living under their house for four or five days when they reported it.
KTLA contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) about the homeowner’s problem. A CDFW representative told the news station they are investigating the issue.
California Black Bears are the only type of bear native to the state. They’re known for eating both plants and animals, and they aren’t picky eaters. While usually not aggressive, like in the situation with Johnson, they can cause damage to belongings and property.
As people build more homes and developments, black bears are losing their natural habitat. This is forcing them to look for food and shelter in neighborhoods, often leading them to homes and garbage cans.
