Spotify has confirmed it won’t punish artists who create songs using AI, even though some users have complained about AI-generated music appearing frequently in new playlists.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to impact many creative areas, but it’s become especially common in the world of music.

Recently, artists creating music with artificial intelligence have emerged, and many listeners can’t distinguish it from music made by humans. For example, Sienna Rose has attracted nearly 3 million monthly listeners, including Selena Gomez, and Xania Monet is another example.

AI-created songs are causing problems for both musicians and people who listen to music. Many are asking streaming services like Spotify and YouTube Music to remove these artificially generated tracks from their suggestions.

Spotify users dismayed by AI tracks on playlists

Spotify users are once again raising concerns that AI-created songs and artists are appearing too often on popular playlists like New Releases, Discover Weekly, and the Viral 50.

Someone noticed that at least half of the songs on Spotify’s recommended playlists were created using AI. Ironically, one of those playlists was even named ‘No Algorithm’.

One Reddit user noticed their Spotify Discover Weekly was increasingly filled with AI-generated music – they counted seven out of thirty songs as AI-made and decided to switch to Deezer. Another user, also frustrated with the growing number of AI songs, mentioned Tidal as a potential alternative. They were tired of having to constantly check if the music they were listening to was created by a human or an AI.

Spotify responds to AI songs taking

The streaming service claims it’s not boosting or hindering AI-generated music, but admits they’re still trying to understand the situation.

Spotify confirmed to TrustedReviews that it doesn’t create or own any of the music on its platform, and doesn’t favor or disadvantage songs made with AI.

Spotify announced in September that they were working to better identify songs created by artificial intelligence. Since then, they’ve taken down tens of millions of these tracks.

Most users haven’t encountered AI-generated music, but when they do, they’re quick to share their opinions.
