Warning: This article includes MAJOR SPOILERS for Ponies season 1!
Peacock’s Ponies is a gripping spy thriller with a fast-paced finale that leaves you thinking. Starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, the show boasts a strong cast and is set against the backdrop of the 1970s Cold War. The story centers on Bea (Clarke) and Twila (Richardson), seemingly ordinary wives of CIA agents – individuals considered ‘people of no interest’ by the agency.
Just before Christmas, the women received devastating news: their husbands, Chris and Tom, had died in a plane crash. Authorities planned to send them home with no explanation, but they refused to accept that. Instead, they joined forces and persuaded Dane, the CIA chief at the Soviet embassy, to recruit them as spies. He reluctantly agreed, believing the Soviets would dismiss them as unlikely agents simply because they were women.
The team begins collaborating with Sasha, a Soviet source supplying them with technology and photographs. Bea feigns a romance with Andrei Visiliev, a prominent KGB official, to gather intelligence for the CIA. At the same time, Twila partners with Vera, a well-connected Soviet intermediary. Predictably, things quickly fall apart in this thrilling spy story, culminating in a satisfying conclusion.
What Really Happened To Bea & Twila’s Husbands In Ponies?
Bea and Twila are determined to uncover the truth about what happened to their husbands. The CIA claims Chris and Tom died in a plane crash, but there’s no proof of any flight or crash ever taking place. In fact, there was no crash – and this much turns out to be accurate, even as more secrets come to light.
Vera tells Twila she was also on the plane, and that it landed at a secret Soviet facility. She remained on board while Tom and Chris got off, and they were then shot by KGB soldiers. The details are now somewhat confusing, and it’s hard to know if Vera is telling the truth for two reasons:
- Bea’s husband, Chris, was the mole, not Tom.
- Chris clearly didn’t die from a gunshot as she said because he’s alive at the end of the season.
She might have deliberately deceived Twila, or she could simply be wrong. Regardless, her story needs to be examined closely. When they land, the real events remain unclear. We do know Chris is alive and currently in Belarus, and Dane appears to be in the know.
We don’t know what happened to Tom – is he alive, was he injured, or is he being held prisoner? Considering the KGB’s past actions, any of those scenarios are possible. The only way to get answers, surprisingly, is if the show Ponies gets a second season.
The Identities Of All The Moles, Explained
The show Ponies keeps you guessing about who can be trusted. The writers cleverly misled viewers with several characters who seemed like potential double agents. The CIA suspects Sasha isn’t fully loyal, and I initially questioned Dane, but his reaction to being blackmailed proved he wasn’t the mole. Shef and Vera also seemed suspicious at times, adding to the uncertainty.
Okay, so by the end of the first season of Ponies, I was totally floored to find out there were spies working at the US embassy! They revealed that Cheryl and Chris were both moles, and while one of them kind of made sense, the other one was a complete shocker. I seriously didn’t see that coming!
From the beginning, Cheryl comes across as overly harsh and makes people distrust her. She overreacts to Eevi, immediately setting off alarm bells. She’s nosy, asking too many questions and inserting herself into things that don’t concern her. And because she holds a lot of influence within the embassy – she’s essentially the office’s main source of information – especially since the male staff often overlook the women, her power is significant.
The biggest surprise is Chris, who everyone thought was a kind and devoted husband. Throughout flashbacks and from what other characters say, he didn’t exhibit any warning signs – and that lack of any obvious issues might actually be a sign. Only Manya ever seemed to distrust him. However, if Vera’s suspicions are true, he’s been secretly providing information to the Soviets all along.
Now, the biggest mysteries revolve around how Cheryl and Chris got involved in the first place. When did they begin working with the KGB, and what motivated them to betray both their spouses and the CIA? Are they being forced to do this, or are they willingly cooperating? And what exactly have they been sharing? Season 2 of Ponies really needs to provide answers to these questions.
How Andrei Vasiliev Discovers Bea’s True Identity
The pretend relationship between Bea and Andrei Vasiliev is incredibly tense, especially considering Andrei’s history of violence towards women. As I noted in my review of Ponies for Ebaster, I constantly felt anxious whenever Andrei appeared on screen. Despite this, Bea manages to maintain the facade of their relationship, and Sasha helps her do so.
Andrei unexpectedly learns Bea’s true identity when she briefly loses her composure. Earlier, Dane cautioned Bea and Twila that carelessness can be fatal for spies. They didn’t consider this warning when they were instructed to have the embassy staff meet with the KGB agents.
Twila easily could have avoided the situation, but everyone mistakenly thinks Bea is Nadya, a schoolteacher from Belarus. Both women casually shook hands with KGB agents, not noticing who they were greeting. If they’d been more careful, they might have gotten away before Andrei spotted Bea.
Honestly, it feels right that this is what tripped them up. They’re not professional spies, you know? It wasn’t like they’d been drilled for years to be constantly on alert. So, of course, they were bound to slip up eventually and let their guard down. It just felt inevitable, given who they are.
How Andrei Vasiliev Is Rising Through The KGB Ranks So Fast
Andrei is considered a significant danger due to his rapid advancement within the KGB, a promotion pace that doesn’t follow the usual rules. It’s eventually revealed he’s achieving this speed by blackmailing people. He secretly installs listening devices and cameras on both Americans and his fellow Soviet agents.
If anyone discovered where he kept the tapes, they could ruin his career. Luckily, Twila, a character in Ponies, realizes he’s hiding them beneath shampoo bottles. Unfortunately, those bottles—and the tapes—are destroyed when a bomb explodes in the CIA’s vault, a vault where Twila had placed the shampoo boxes.
What Actually Happened To Sasha’s Sister
Sasha is working with the CIA on the Ponies project because he believes the KGB was responsible for his sister’s death. Twila discovers in episode 3 that the Soviets had a history of exploiting and then murdering sex workers. Although Sasha didn’t believe his sister was involved in that world, her death mirrored the way those other women were killed.
During that episode, one comment suggests Sasha’s sister, Galyna, might not have been killed by the KGB. A woman working at the brothel said she recognized everyone in the photos except for one – and that was Galyna. The reason behind this statement is explained in the season one finale.
Andrei Vaseliev claims the CIA was behind Galyna’s death, supposedly to pressure Sasha into cooperating with them. While I don’t fully trust Andrei – he’s known for being manipulative himself – the idea isn’t far-fetched. Galyna didn’t fit the pattern of the other victims, and it’s clear that manipulation isn’t limited to the Soviets in this show.
How Ponies Season 1’s Ending Sets Up Season 2
Okay, so I just finished watching the first season of Ponies on Peacock, and wow, it was a rollercoaster! The finale left me totally hanging, clearly setting things up for season two. Basically, that bomb Cheryl handed over to the CIA caused a massive fire – the vault and the entire building went up in flames, and a lot of really important tech and info was lost in the process. It’s a huge deal!
Andrei Vasiliev manages to break free and arrives with KGB agents who are posing as firefighters. They immediately threaten Bea and Twila with guns. While it’s likely these two will make it through unharmed, the real mystery is figuring out how they’ll escape.
The episode also reveals a major twist: Chris was the mole all along, and he’s still alive! This brings up a lot of questions about his motives and actions. Plus, it’s uncertain if Sasha will recover from being stabbed, leaving viewers with many unanswered questions.
Peacock really needs to release season 2 of Ponies – it’s a great show and fans are eager to find out what happens next.
