Josh Safdie almost ended his film, Marty Supreme, with a surprising supernatural twist. He revealed in an A24 Podcast interview with Sean Baker that the character Milton Rockwell, played by Kevin O’Leary, was originally intended to be a real vampire, not just a symbolically vampiric figure. Like the film Sinners, it would have concluded with a nostalgic segment reminiscent of music videos from the MTV era.
According to Safdie, the movie nearly concluded with Marty taking his granddaughter to a Tears for Fears concert in the 1980s. The scene would have shown him settled into a comfortable life with a family and a nice home, enjoying the show from great seats. He’d be reflecting on the song ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ and contemplating youth, success, and whether he was truly fulfilling his purpose. Then, suddenly, Mr. Wonderful would attack him. Safdie explained they even started working on prosthetics to age up Timothée Chalamet for this ending, but A24 pushed back, with one executive questioning if it was the right move. Ultimately, it seems like changing the ending was a good decision.
Kevin O’Leary had mentioned a potentially dark and unusual ending for Marty Supreme, even saying he’d had fake vampire teeth made as a possibility. It’s unclear what that meant exactly. The question remains whether that original ending would have worked, or if A24 was correct to ask the Safdie brothers to scrap it. Regardless, it would have created a compelling pairing when shown with Sinners.
