Ryan Coogler, the creator of Sinners, recently shared the reason behind his decision to center the horror film around twin characters. Michael B. Jordan plays both Smoke and Stack Moore, twins who return to Clarksdale and encounter a group of dangerous vampires. Though having one actor play two roles presented challenges, Coogler always envisioned the story revolving around twins, believing it was the perfect way to draw audiences in.
Ryan Coogler recently talked on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang, about what inspired his film Sinners and how he worked with composer Ludwig Göransson on its music. Coogler explained that Göransson, who has won an Oscar, was involved in the project very early on, even before the screenplay was written. Poehler asked if the plan for Michael B. Jordan to play twins was always part of the story, and Coogler responded:
That really grabbed my attention. These days, you need a lot of compelling reasons to get interested in something, and I think things should offer several appealing aspects. For me, it’s personal – I adore my twin family members. But I also have a strong, almost overwhelming fear of doppelgängers – it’s a real phobia for me.

‘Sinners’ Won Two Golden Globes – Is Oscar Glory Next?
After the film Sinners became a critical success in 2025, its fans immediately started pushing for recognition during the 2026 awards season. As nominations were revealed by various groups, Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie was, as many expected, nominated for several awards.
The film Sinners received significant recognition at the Critics Choice Awards with 13 nominations and 4 wins. It then earned 7 nominations at the Golden Globes, winning awards for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and Best Original Score. However, some fans reacted negatively to these wins, feeling that Sinners deserved consideration in major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

The Oscars are coming up, and while Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is a strong contender, the race is very close. Critics seem to favor Anderson’s film, though it feels like he’s finally receiving the recognition he deserves. This year also belongs to Timothée Chalamet, whose incredible performance in Marty Supreme is winning him many awards, which unfortunately lowers Michael B. Jordan’s chances of winning Best Actor. Currently, Best Original Score appears to be the only guaranteed win for Coogler’s fantastic horror film, and it truly deserves even more recognition than that.
