Last month, a mysterious teaser for a new film called Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and starring Tom Cruise, appeared online. We know it’s coming out in October and is being described as a “Comedy Of Catastrophic Proportions,” but details are scarce. I was already curious, but after hearing recent comments from one of Cruise’s fellow actors, I’m really looking forward to it.
Jesse Plemons, in a recent interview with Variety, hinted at the tone of his upcoming film, Digger. Though he didn’t share much detail, film fans will be excited to hear his description. While Digger is known to be a comedy, Plemons compared its style to that of a classic: Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. He described the film, directed by Iñárritu, with a blend of interesting adjectives, leading to the comparison.
This script is truly unique – it’s a bizarre, hilarious, and heartbreaking read. It starts with a vibe similar to the dark comedy of ‘Dr. Strangelove,’ but quickly evolves into something completely unexpected.
Jesse Plemons has collaborated with unconventional filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos on several projects, giving him a good understanding of films that are strange and blend different moods. He seems to be returning to that type of work with his new movie, Digger.
I’m happy to hear the comparison to Dr. Strangelove – it’s a truly hilarious film! However, I wish the person making the comparison would clarify what they mean. Are they pointing out that, like the movie, this story has many characters contributing to a bigger picture? Or are they highlighting the potentially catastrophic consequences? It’s unclear, and the phrase ‘and then it becomes something else entirely’ just adds to the confusion.
The film boasts a fantastic cast including Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman, but it’s Tom Cruise who plays the lead role of Digger Rockwell. Jesse Plemons, known from Breaking Bad, was particularly excited to watch Cruise embody a completely new character – something he hasn’t done since American Made in 2017.
It was really exciting to watch Tom fully commit to the role and showcase his amazing acting talent. It wasn’t about dangerous stunts, but about a powerful performance.
I’m really excited for Digger to finally hit theaters on October 2nd! It feels like a long wait, but I’m sure we’ll learn more about the movie – and see what Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu have created together – in the coming months. I’ll definitely be checking TopMob regularly for all the latest news and updates as we get closer to the 2026 release!
