Even after almost ten years, Pokémon Go is still being updated with new features and improvements. After a major update to the leveling system in October, the game has now added Remote Trades – a feature players have been asking for for a long time.
Similar to how Remote Raids let you battle in raids from anywhere, Remote Trades allow you to trade Pokémon with others, no matter where they are. However, you’ll need to reach a new, higher level of friendship called “Forever Friends” with the player before you can use this feature.
This guide covers everything about Remote Trades: how they function, which Pokémon can’t be traded this way, and how to establish a lasting friendship with another player.

What Is Remote Trading?
Remote Trades let you swap Pokémon with friends no matter where they are in the world. This is a big improvement because previously, you could only trade Pokémon with someone physically nearby. It’s now much easier to exchange Pokémon, and it also helps you get region-exclusive Pokémon like Farfetch’d and Mr. Mime.
Remote trading does have a couple of limitations. Unlike trading in person, you need to specifically mark which Pokémon you’re willing to trade online. Also, you can only trade remotely with players who are at the ‘Forever Friends’ level – a new, higher friendship tier than ‘Best Friends’. So, you’ll need to build a strong friendship with someone before you can trade with them remotely.
How To Become Forever Friends

Pokémon Go recently added a new friendship level called “Forever Friends” with the introduction of Remote Trades. You can reach this level by earning friendship points through playing and interacting with another player.
Each day, you can strengthen your bond with another player by earning up to one friendship point. You earn these points by interacting with them – things like exchanging gifts, trading Pokémon, or teaming up for raids. Plus, completing new weekly challenges together gives you even more friendship points.
How To Trade Remotely
After becoming best friends with another player in the game, you can trade Pokémon even when you’re not physically together. The trading process for these close friends is a bit unique, though.
To start, tag the Pokémon you’re willing to trade using the Remote Trade feature. When you’re both ready, you’ll each see the other’s tagged Pokémon and can pick up to three you want. Then, each of you will choose one of the requested Pokémon to send as a trade.
To add a bit of complexity, you can only do one Remote Trade with a friend at a time. Once you’ve used it, you’ll need to build up your friendship level with that player again before you can do another trade.
Ineligible Pokemon
As we discussed, you can’t remotely trade all Pokémon. Recently caught Pokémon, as well as special types like Shadow and Mythical Pokémon, are excluded. However, remote trades don’t count towards your daily limit for special trades, no matter which Pokémon you’re exchanging.
Here’s the full list of Pokemon that can’t be traded remotely:
- Pokemon caught in the past 30 days
- Previously traded Pokemon
- Shadow Pokemon
- Mythical Pokemon
- Pokemon defending Gyms or Power Spots
- Pokemon that are set as your buddy
- Pokemon that are actively Mega-Evolved
- Fused Pokemon
- Crowned Sword Zacian or Crowned Shield Zamazenta
- Pokemon placed at Pokemon Playgrounds
Remote Trading is now available in Pokémon Go during the ongoing Precious Paths season, which features a number of events and activities throughout the month. If you want to know about everything happening in the game, check out our summary of Pokémon Go events for January.
