Microsoft’s Project Mara, An Experimental Game About Mental Terror, May No Longer Happen

Ninja Theory, the studio behind Hellblade, revealed Project Mara in 2020, but it doesn’t seem like the game will actually be made. This isn’t entirely unexpected, as the game was intended as a test of innovative storytelling methods. According to reporter Jez Corden, Project Mara was always just an idea and never had a firm commitment to be fully developed and released.

He added: “It could be developed into a game some day, or evolve into something else.”

In 2020, Ninja Theory announced that their game, Project Mara, would realistically portray the terrifying experience of mental illness. They planned to base the game on real stories and thorough research, aiming for an accurate and impactful depiction of psychological horror.

From the very beginning, Ninja Theory described the project as an experiment, explaining they wanted it to demonstrate the potential of a new way to tell stories.

I’m really excited about what Ninja Theory is up to next! I heard from Corden on the Xbox Two podcast that it might be Hellblade 3, and apparently, it’s going to have a lot more action and be more interactive than the first two games. Now, the first two were gorgeous and really focused on the story, which some people loved, but others wanted more gameplay. Luckily, it sounds like the new game will still have that cinematic feel we’ve come to expect from them, but with a bigger focus on actually playing the game.

Rumors suggest Microsoft is developing several new games, such as a StarCraft shooter, Wolfenstein 3, updated versions of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and a brand new Warcraft title.

In 2026, Xbox will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a series of events. The celebrations begin on January 22nd with the Xbox Developer Direct, which will give fans a closer look at upcoming games like Fable and Forza Horizon 6.
