After news spread that Jennifer Lawrence would be reprising her role in the Hunger Games series, the actress has finally spoken out. Though Lawrence has enjoyed a successful career, highlighted by an Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, she’s perhaps best known for playing Katniss Everdeen, the victor from District 12.
Jennifer Lawrence rose to fame playing the main character in the Hunger Games movies, appearing in four films between 2012 and 2015. The last movie, Mockingjay – Part 2 (released in 2015), concluded the story of her character, Katniss, and her role as a leader in the fight against President Snow’s oppressive rule.
During an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Jennifer Lawrence was asked about reconnecting with director Francis Lawrence. She playfully responded, “We might have.” Shortly after, the host mentioned rumors about her returning to The Hunger Games, which Lawrence appeared to confirm with a casual, “It’s already all over the internet, isn’t it?”
Jennifer Lawrence, known for her role in ‘The Hunger Games,’ didn’t offer any further details, but she had previously discussed her time working on the series during the question-and-answer session.
Before news sources officially announced her comeback in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, many people believed Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson would return as Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch, respectively.

I’m so excited for the new prequel, which takes us back to Haymitch’s time in the 50th Hunger Games! I’ve heard it also includes a really moving epilogue where we see an older Haymitch looking back on everything he’s been through. Everyone was guessing about possible cameos, and I honestly didn’t expect the news that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson would be returning – it’s amazing to think they’re coming back to Panem after all this time, over a decade later!
Currently, Woody Harrelson hasn’t officially been confirmed to return as Haymitch. Joseph Zada will play a young Haymitch, who won the Hunger Games representing District 12. The cast also includes newcomers McKenna Grace, Ben Wang, and Maya Hawke, alongside Elle Fanning. Ralph Fiennes will be back as President Snow, but this time portraying a younger version of the character. Francis Lawrence is returning to direct the film.
Sunrise on the Reaping tells the story of the 50th Hunger Games, also called the Second Quarter Quell. While we know Haymitch won, and Catching Fire gives some details about his victory, this new prequel will delve deeper into his experience, particularly the surprising events that led to him becoming one of the tributes.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026.
