Elijah Wood, who famously played Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, responded to Ian McKellen’s hints about a new movie, ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’ Wood shared his excited, but mysterious, thoughts about the potential return of beloved characters during a recent public appearance.
Elijah Wood talks about Ian McKellen’s comment about Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
At FAN EXPO New Orleans, Elijah Wood responded to Ian McKellen’s remarks about potentially reuniting Frodo and Gandalf in a new Lord of the Rings story, ‘The Hunt for Gollum’.
When asked about Ian McKellen’s comments, Elijah Wood remained tight-lipped, playfully suggesting that ‘a wizard is to be trusted’ while also stating he wasn’t permitted to confirm anything. He did express enthusiasm for the film, describing the project as a reunion of the original creative team. Wood highlighted Philippa Boyens’ involvement as a co-writer and producer, emphasizing that the core group behind the original films is working together again (according to Screen Rant).
Wood pointed out that Andy Serkis directing the film makes perfect sense, as Serkis has truly made the character his own and is now directing a film about him. He also mentioned they plan to create more films within this world, which he finds very promising. While Wood didn’t say whether he’d be in The Hunt for Gollum, he did share his enthusiasm for the project and how it connects to the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
During a fan event in London called “For the Love of Fantasy,” Ian McKellen let slip that characters named Frodo and Gandalf will appear in the upcoming movie, but didn’t reveal any further details. He also mentioned filming is scheduled to start in May 2026. Both McKellen and Elijah Wood were present at the event.
Andy Serkis directed the movie and once again plays the character of Gollum. The story is set right before the events of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and centers on Gandalf’s quest to find Gollum. The screenplay was written by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, Arty Papageorgiou, and J.R.R. Tolkien. It will be released on December 17, 2027.
