I was so thrilled to see Chris Pratt take on the role of Mario last year! He really surprised everyone as this unlikely hero, and his voice work alongside Charlie Day as Luigi was fantastic. Now, I’m already counting down the days until we get the sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – it’s going to be amazing!
I was so excited to hear that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now on Prime Video! It’s actually doing really well – right now it’s the 9th most popular movie on there in the US, even beating out Jason Statham’s A Working Man. And it’s not just the US, either! People in Bolivia, Guatemala, and Costa Rica are loving it too – it’s the #3 movie in those countries. Plus, it’s in the top 10 in a bunch of other places like Colombia, Mexico, and Panama. It’s great to see so many people still enjoying it before the sequel comes out!
Released in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a huge financial success, earning over $1.3 billion globally on a $100 million budget. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day starred as Mario and Luigi, and they were joined by Jack Black, who voiced Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who voiced Princess Peach.
The popularity of The Super Mario Bros. Movie on streaming platforms is building excitement for the next installment, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 3, 2026. Chris Pratt will reprise his role as Mario, alongside returning cast members Keegan-Michael Key, Jack Black, and Anya Taylor-Joy. The new film will also feature a voice performance by as Bowser Jr.
Brie Larson will join the cast of the upcoming Mario sequel, playing the strong and determined Princess Rosalina. Larson previously won an Academy Award in 2016 for her role in Room. Just like the first Mario movie, this new film is based on the beloved Nintendo video game series. The Super Mario Galaxy game originally came out on Nintendo’s Wii console in 2007.
Fans Loved the First Mario Movie
While critics weren’t thrilled with The Super Mario Bros. Movie (giving it a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences clearly enjoyed it. The film has a strong 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 10,000 reviews. Before the movie came out in 2023, Chris Pratt explained his decision not to use an Italian accent for his portrayal of Mario.
It all made sense to me, and I was definitely nervous when I was offered the role,” Pratt explained. “My first thought was, ‘Don’t mess this up!’ I think that’s where my approach came from. Fans are really passionate about this character, and they’ve seen beloved franchises ruined before. It’s a tough industry, and sometimes movies are made simply because a well-known title will attract an audience,” he shared in a 2023 interview.
