Netflix Has Already Green-Lit Two More Movies from Author of Its “Gen-Z ‘When Harry Met Sally'” No. 1 Hit

Netflix is continuing to invest in author Emily Henry, planning to create two more movies based on her books. Her recent film, People We Meet on Vacation, which premiered on January 9, 2026, and stars Emily Bader and Tom Blyth, has been a hit with both viewers and critics. Many have compared it to When Harry Met Sally, but for a younger generation, and it currently holds an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to Variety, Netflix has acquired the rights to the movie Funny Story, which started development earlier in 2024. In addition, Netflix is changing plans for Happy Place, turning it from a planned TV series into a full-length film. This deal was finalized on January 8, 2026, just before the release of People We Met on Vacation on the streaming service. Alex Black, head of the production company Lyrical Media that’s making Funny Story, released a statement saying:

Emily Henry is a talented storyteller who creates characters people genuinely love, which explains why her books are so popular. We’re thrilled to be working with her again after ‘People You Meet on Vacation’ to adapt ‘Funny Story’ for the big screen – it’s going to be a fantastic project bringing her characters to life.

Why Netflix is So Invested in Emily Henry’s Books

Netflix

Released in April 2024, Funny Story centers around Daphne, a children’s librarian who finds herself single after her fiancé, Peter, admits he’s still in love with his childhood friend, Petra. Stuck in Peter’s hometown near a lake, Daphne unexpectedly becomes roommates with Miles, Petra’s ex. They team up to playfully get back at their former partners, but end up developing feelings for each other. Henry is currently writing the screenplay, and the project hasn’t yet been assigned a director or cast.

Released in April 2023, Happy Place tells the story of Harriet and Wyn, an ex-engaged couple who fake their relationship for one last summer vacation with friends, hoping to figure out what truly makes them happy. While Bridgerton producer Leila Cohan was initially planned as the showrunner, it’s currently unknown if she’ll continue with the project now that it’s become a movie. Jennifer Lopez’s production company, Nuyorican Productions, is still involved.
