Jon Bernthal has had a packed schedule recently. He reprised his roles in The Bear and Daredevil: Born Again in 2025, and kicked off 2026 with a new limited series.
The new six-episode series launched on January 8th, and within a day, it became the most popular show on Netflix worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. Titled His & Hers, it reached the number one spot in 57 countries, including the United States.
Jon Bernthal stars as Detective Jack Harper, alongside Anna. The series also features Pablo Schreiber, Marin Ireland, Sunita Mani, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Crystal Fox, Chris Bauer, and Poppy Liu.
The film His & Hers takes place in the hot Atlanta summer. It centers around Anna, a woman who is increasingly withdrawing from her life, isolating herself from friends and leaving her job as a news anchor.
Okay, so the film kicks off with Anna, a woman clearly stuck in a rut, suddenly jolted awake by news of a murder back in her quiet hometown of Dahlonega. It’s not just news, though – she practically throws herself into the investigation, determined to uncover the truth. It’s a compelling setup; she’s not a detective, but something about this case really grabs her and pulls her back into the world.
This makes Detective Jack Harper suspect she’s involved, and she quickly becomes a central focus of his investigation. The story hints that “everyone lies,” suggesting there’s more to the situation than meets the eye and two different versions of the truth.
The series was developed by William Oldroyd, known for his work on Lady Macbeth, and is based on Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel of the same title. Dee Johnson served as showrunner and produced the show with Oldroyd, Thompson, Campo, Carmichael, Chastain, Rajan, and Dubuque.
His & Hers Earned Strong Reviews
Beyond being a hit with viewers, the show His & Hers also impressed critics. It launched with a high score, earning an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the “Certified Fresh” designation.
In a review for The Wall Street Journal, John Anderson described Jodie Thompson as captivating and subtly emotional. He noted that Jon Bernthal sometimes overplays tender scenes. While they approach their roles in this crime drama differently, Anderson found both actors believable.
Reuben Baron of Looper.com felt the ending of His & Hers was interestingly flawed, but most of the series before that was just average and uninspired.
Viewers really enjoyed His & Hers, giving it a strong 78% rating on the Popcornmeter. One critic called it a “guilty pleasure” with good writing and performances, highlighting the excellent cast and satisfying conclusion. Many others appreciated the surprising plot twist, strong acting, and overall entertainment value.
The author, Feeney, also expressed her enthusiasm for the show. In an interview with Tudum, she shared that seeing His & Hers on Netflix marks seven years since she first wrote the book, calling it an incredible journey. She said she deeply loves both the story and the TV adaptation, and is grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life.
His & Hers is streaming on Netflix.
