The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) released its preliminary awards list today. For those following the awards season, this is the last chance to get a read on potential BAFTA winners before the Academy Award nominations are announced on January 22nd. Usually, the BAFTA nominations help predict the Oscars, but this year things are different. Due to a scheduling quirk, BAFTA will announce its nominees on January 27th, after the Oscar nominations are revealed – a rather unusual situation.
Even though BAFTA expanded its lists this year, there were still some surprising omissions and snubs. Notably missing from the shortlist was Wagner Moura, the Brazilian actor from The Secret Agent, who many believe will receive an Oscar nomination. As usual, British films like The Ballad of Wallis Island and I Swear were heavily represented, both making the longlist for Best Film. One Battle After Another continued to lead with 16 mentions, closely followed by Hamnet and Sinners with 14 each. Wicked: For Good also performed well, receiving eight mentions, though it didn’t make the Best Film list.
Below, find the full group of BAFTA longlists, ahead of the ceremony on February 16.

Okay, so I’ve been diving into a lot of different looks lately, and I wanted to share some standouts in makeup and hair. First up, Bugonia really impressed me – a truly creative vision. Then there’s Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which delivered the classic elegance we expect. Frankenstein was surprisingly effective with its effects, and Hamnet offered a more subdued, natural approach. Marty Supreme was bold and experimental, while Nuremberg opted for a historically accurate, almost documentary-style look. One Battle After Another was gritty and realistic, and Sinners leaned into a darker, more dramatic aesthetic. The Smashing Machine was… well, let’s just say it was memorable! And finally, Wicked: For Good absolutely nailed the fantastical, vibrant world of Oz. A really diverse range of styles this time around!
