Silent Hill f: Who is Mayumi Suzutani?

Silent Hill f, staying true to the series’ roots, is packed with rich details and backstory, offering players a lot to discover. As Silent Hill games are known for hiding clues in subtle details, this new installment gives fans even more reason to play through it multiple times.

Early in the game, you’ll notice a missing person poster for a girl named Mayumi Suzutani – it’s one of the first clues you come across.

At first, it appears to be just a way to build suspense and enhance the story’s dark, isolated atmosphere. However, it’s actually much more significant and interesting than that. Essentially, Mayumi is far more important than we realize, and she reflects the struggles we’re about to witness.

That just leaves players wondering, apart from who she is exactly, what does her story mean for us?

This article will contain spoilers for Silent Hill f and its endings.

Who Exactly is Mayumi?

A Missing Girl with Missing Information

You’ll first encounter Mayumi Suzutani shortly after talking to Sakuko. If you walk past her house and look to the left, you’ll see a bulletin board with several papers posted. One of them is a Missing Person poster for Mayumi, describing what she was last seen wearing. Unfortunately, the poster is torn, so details about who she was with or what she was doing when she disappeared are unknown.

Hinako even makes a comment about this, with no idea of what this means in relation to her.

When you first reach the Dark Shrine, you’ll explore a shadowy, sacred place and try to unlock the Shrine Vault. As you investigate, you’ll discover writings and messages hinting that you’re in a realm of the deceased.

Among the many messages, one is particularly heartbreaking: a sad apology to Mayumi’s parents, knowing they likely won’t receive it. She wrote, “Mom, Dad… I don’t think I’ll make it home. I just wish I could see you one last time.”

It turns out Mayumi didn’t disappear mysteriously as everyone thought. She’s actually here, at Heaven’s Benediction, and we’re not sure why. This probably isn’t good for her, but it does explain where she’s been.

Later, during our second visit to the Dark Shrine – where we’ll fight Sakuko – we’ll find a room filled with portraits of women who have no faces, including one of Hinako. Next to Hinako’s portrait is another girl wearing the same clothes described in Mayumi’s missing person poster: a white blouse, a long navy skirt, and a beige neckerchief with black polka dots.

We’ve discovered a connection between Hinako, Mayumi, and many other women facing the same challenges as us – a discovery that could drastically change everything about the game.

What Made Mayumi Special?

An Ending Gives It Away

Throughout the game, you’ll discover pieces of a document called “A Perspective on Hierogamy,” which explains the relationships between gods and humans. You don’t find the complete document until your third time playing, and many players actually piece together the story through the game’s different endings.

The ‘Ebisugaoka in Silence’ ending reveals a key piece of lore: very rarely, a girl is born with incredible divine power. When this happens, a spell affects the head of the Tsuneki clan – currently Kotoyuki, known as Fox Mask – causing him to become completely infatuated and relentlessly pursue this girl, intending to marry her.

This suggests that Hinako, like Alessa Gillespie, was born with a special, god-like power. And, just as with Alessa, she was targeted by both divine forces and zealous followers who were determined to achieve their own goals.

Some documents, like the “Messy Scrawls,” appear to be written by Inari, the Fox God, or perhaps a previous leader of the Tsuneki clan. These writings mention “the last girl” or “the previous girl” – phrases that, considering how the story ends, clearly refer to the wives of past leaders.

I suddenly remembered all the faceless women from before, and it became obvious that Mayumi is just like them – a woman with special powers that Inari wants to marry.

It appears Inari has many divine brides, which clarifies the events in ‘A Perspective on Hierogamy,’ especially when Hinako learns Mayumi wrote the documents herself. This shifts the text from feeling like academic research to personal diary entries, offering Hinako a glimpse into her own future.

What Does this Mean for Hinako?

Very Simply: Foreshadowing

Mayumi Suzutani’s story hints at what’s to come for Hinako and explains how she ended up in this predicament. In a document called ‘A Perspective on Hierogamy,’ Mayumi shares her concerns about being chosen by Inari for marriage, even questioning if marrying a god could be a terrible experience. Considering the game’s overall themes, this is a clever way to foreshadow the frightening events to come.

The stories reveal that Mayumi had been married for several years, but she was troubled by lingering questions. Though she’d initially been thrilled and felt privileged to be chosen, she couldn’t help but wonder why she was considered special – until her father-in-law explained that her lineage was touched by the stars.

It’s been discovered that very rare blood types exist outside the common ABO system, and Mayumi appears to have one of these. This unusual blood type might be the source of her powers, and it suggests Hinako shares the same genetic trait. Women with this rare blood are traditionally chosen as brides to maintain a connection with Inari, the deity believed to protect Ebisugaoka from the dangerous Water Dragon (and the poisonous gas from the geysers). This explains why the town is attacked with gas and forced to evacuate whenever someone rejects his advances.

As the story ends, Mayumi worries about who might come looking for her and promises to do everything she can to help others adjust to their new circumstances. The scene then shifts to show Hinako at the very start of the game.

Mayumi’s story essentially is the path Hinako is meant to take, and how that path unfolds – leading to different endings – depends on the player’s choices. Though Mayumi never physically appears in the game, her presence lingers throughout the story, like a ghost, which adds to the game’s unsettling atmosphere.
