Get ready to see *The Paper* on regular TV! NBC is adding the show, which is related to *The Office*, to its prime-time schedule on November 10th, just two months after the first season became available for streaming on Peacock. It will air on Mondays at 8:30 p.m., between the comedy *St. Denis Medical* and the reality competition *The Voice*. This is the first time a show originally made for Peacock will have a full season broadcast on NBC, and it probably won’t be the last. NBC has occasionally aired single episodes of Peacock shows to encourage viewers to subscribe, but this is a much bigger move.
Over the past few years, it’s become more and more common for streaming shows to also air on traditional TV. The gap between when a show appears online and on TV is getting smaller and smaller. For example, in 2023, CBS used the writers’ and actors’ strikes as a reason to broadcast the first season of *Yellowstone* on Sunday nights. ABC has also been airing older seasons of Hulu’s *Only Murders in the Building* during the middle of its TV season for the past two years. Just this spring, ABC showed all episodes of Hulu’s *The Paradise* on the network only five weeks after the first season finished streaming.
NBCUniversal decided to air *The Paper* on traditional television because of its connection to *The Office*. They believed many of the millions who watched *The Office* on Thursdays still tune into NBC and haven’t switched to streaming on Peacock. Lisa Katz, head of scripted series at NBCU Entertainment, explained they wanted *The Paper* to have the same chance to reach a broad audience. NBCU estimates that only 4% of their regular viewers also use Peacock, meaning *The Paper* will be a completely new show for most primetime viewers. A key benefit for NBC – and other networks – is that airing shows originally made for streaming is significantly cheaper than creating a brand-new sitcom.
Streamers, especially those smaller than giants like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, don’t risk much by experimenting with shows like *The Paper*. While Peacock hopes *The Paper* will attract new subscribers and boost viewership, most of that impact happens shortly after a new season is released – unless the show becomes a huge hit immediately. Dedicated fans of *The Office* who were interested in seeing the new series likely checked it out by mid-November. (Early numbers suggest *The Paper* is performing well – Peacock reports it’s their second most popular comedy debut, following only *Ted*, which benefited from being released after a live NFL game.) Furthermore, if the first season of *The Paper* does well on NBC, some of those viewers might subscribe to Peacock when the second season arrives next year. According to Katz, the company’s strategy is to reach fans wherever they are by releasing shows on various platforms to increase visibility and engagement.
NBC is also announcing today how it will complete its fall TV schedule. The network will air a new comedy called *Stumble* on Fridays at 8:30 p.m., following the popular new show *Happy’s Place* starring Reba McEntire. *Stumble* is a mockumentary-style comedy about a junior college cheerleading squad. The show features Jenn Lyon (known from *Claws*) and Taran Killam, a former *Saturday Night Live* cast member, with Kristen Chenoweth appearing in multiple episodes. Both *Stumble* and *Happy’s Place* will premiere on November 7th.
