Spider-Man: Sony Prevented [Spoiler] from Appearing in 1 of the Best MCU Movies

Director Ryan Coogler shared that Sony didn’t allow a certain character to make a cameo appearance in the movie Black Panther.

What character did Ryan Coogler want to be in Black Panther?

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Ryan Coogler confirmed a rumor that he had considered including Kraven the Hunter in the 2018 film Black Panther. He explained that his initial vision for the movie drew inspiration from Christopher Priest’s Black Panther comic book series, and specifically included a fight scene between Black Panther and Kraven.

Unfortunately for Coogler, he said that the idea was quickly shot down by the higher ups at Sony.

Coogler, a big Spider-Man fan—particularly of the 90s animated series—wanted to include the character Kraven in the movie. He felt Kraven was excellent both in the cartoon and the comics, so he asked if it was possible. The studio initially said no, but checked with Sony anyway, who firmly rejected the idea.

Coogler now feels good about the decision to include Ulysses Klaue in the film, as it brought Andy Serkis into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and allowed them to work together. Meanwhile, the character Kraven eventually got his own movie in 2024, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but it wasn’t well-received by audiences.

Following the success of his 2025 film, Sinners, Ryan Coogler is returning to direct for Marvel. He recently worked as an executive producer on the Disney+ series Ironheart and is now preparing to direct a third Black Panther movie. Details are scarce, but reports suggest the film will feature a high-profile cast, and there’s even talk that Denzel Washington might join the project.
