Allen Iverson had an incredible basketball career, earning 11 All-Star selections and even winning the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award. Now a Hall of Famer, he’s widely considered one of the best players ever. Despite his own legendary status, Iverson was – and still is – a huge fan of Michael Jordan. He remembers being completely captivated the first time he saw Jordan play in person.
Michael Jordan is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, earning the respect of his peers, even fellow legends. Magic Johnson famously described Jordan as the most physically gifted athlete he’d ever seen, amazed by his incredible stamina. Allen Iverson, who grew up watching Jordan’s career take off, also holds him in high regard, deeply appreciating Jordan’s impact on the game.
I just wanted to see Mike play. He was my idol, the player I looked up to most. He’s the reason Allen Iverson became a household name – everything started with him.
Michael Jordan, a basketball legend with six NBA championships, 14 All-Star selections, and five MVP awards, is often compared to today’s stars like LeBron James. However, many still consider him the greatest of all time, which is easy to see considering everything he achieved. Allen Iverson is clearly a big fan and acknowledges Jordan’s impact on his own career. Iverson recently shared a story on The Tonight Show (available on YouTube) about the first time he saw Jordan play, and he described it as a truly unbelievable experience.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw him. I just stared at Mike, completely starstruck. But what really stuck with me was how unreal he seemed. It was the first time I’d ever seen a person who didn’t look…human. I even talked about it in my Hall of Fame speech. He had this incredible aura, almost like an orange glow around him. It reminded me of what they said on Chappelle’s Show about Rick James – seeing his aura, feeling like he wasn’t quite real.
It might seem funny that Allen Iverson would compare meeting Michael Jordan to a sketch from Chappelle’s Show, but I totally understand how seeing someone you idolize could leave you speechless. It’s easy to forget that Iverson is a huge star himself – people still ask him for autographs and photos all the time. In fact, his friends sometimes have to remind him just how famous he is, even when he’s with Jordan!
Things are just awkward now. I get so flustered around him – I’m still a huge fan, and it’s noticeable! I’m actually making my friends uncomfortable. They have to nudge me and tell me to relax, saying I’m acting silly and that I’m successful in my own right, too.
The athlete who consistently appears on the cover of the NBA 2K video game is undoubtedly a major star, and I hope he recognizes that. While Michael Jordan is a legendary figure, Allen Iverson deserves recognition for his incredible impact on both basketball and popular culture. Like his idol, Iverson possesses a captivating presence that makes him seem almost otherworldly.
