Originally, the creators of Hazbin Hotel considered using a voice actor from the Shrek franchise. Brian d’Arcy James, a well-known Broadway performer who voiced Shrek in Shrek the Musical, applied for a role in the Prime Video series, but wasn’t ultimately cast, despite his impressive career.
James sighed, saying, “I didn’t get the part. I guess I just wasn’t good enough. Oh well, that’s Hazbin Hotel for you.” He continued, “You win some, you lose some.”
Hazbin Hotel Cast Sings Season 2 Spoilers at New York Comic Con
Joel Perez, the voice of Valentino from Hazbin Hotel, started a game where the cast would hint at Season 2 with single-word clues. He began with “Sexy,” and then Alex Brightman, who voices Sir Pentious and Adam, added “Loneliness.” Lilli Cooper, who plays Velvette, followed up with a suggestive “Catfight.”
Amir Talai, who voices Alastor and Tom Trench, took inspiration from Krystina Alabado’s (Cherri Bomb) initial concept of “Epic.” This led Blake Roman (Angel Dust/Egg Boiz) to select “Violent” for his teaser. Alabado then shifted her focus to the enigmatic “Waiting,” and Kimiko Glenn (Niffty/Susan) concluded the series of teasers with “Amazing.”
Vivienne Medrano, the creator of Hazbin Hotel, responded playfully when asked to participate in a bit of fun, saying her contribution would be a loud, high-pitched scream. “Mine for every season is, ‘AAAHHHH!'” she joked, which made the whole cast laugh.
Brian d’Arcy James Brings Shrek to Life in Broadway Musical
Brian d’Arcy James was the original voice of Shrek in the Broadway musical Shrek the Musical, which first debuted in December 2008. He played the lead role from the very beginning, starting with its initial performances in Seattle and continuing through the original Broadway run. Later, Ben Crawford and then Eric Petersen took on the role, first for the U.S. tour.
James performed as Shrek, alongside Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Chester Gregory and Daniel Breaker as Donkey, and Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad. He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, and won both the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical.
