EA and the team behind Battlefield have explained how cross-play will function in the new Battlefield game, after some initial uncertainty caused by a developer’s comments.
Battlefield Studios explained to IGN that players can choose to limit cross-play to only consoles. When this option is enabled, the game won’t include players on PCs.
An EA representative explained how cross-play works on consoles. When enabled, the game will *try* to match you with other console players first, but it can’t guarantee it will always happen. You can turn cross-play off completely to play only with people using the same platform as you.
For players on computers (PC), cross-play is automatically enabled and there’s no way to disable it. Here’s how EA describes the relevant settings:
Cross-play ON
- On console, when cross-play is on, we will prioritize allocating you on servers with other console-only players, but players can expect to be in a larger matchmaking pool with players on all platforms. Cross-play On is the only option available on PC.
Cross-play OFF
- You will only play against players on your platform (Xbox only if on Xbox, PlayStation only if on PlayStation). Joining with friends/parties containing players from other platforms will not be available.
Battlefield 6 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S starting October 10th. A separate battle royale game mode is also being created and is expected to release around October 28th.
