James Cameron thrilled viewers around the globe with the release of his latest Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Picking up right after the events of Avatar: The Way of Water, Fire and Ash follows the Sully family as they mourn the loss of Neteyam. Meanwhile, the Resources Development Administration teams up with the dangerous Mangkwan Clan, led by the ruthless Varang, creating a deadly new threat.
Having grossed $345 million worldwide, the Avatar movies are continuing to do very well. Work on Avatar 4 is reportedly already happening, with a planned release date in 2029.
If you loved Fire and Ash or want to explore worlds like Pandora from the Avatar movies, here are 10 games that fans of the third film will likely enjoy.
Spoilers for Avatar: Fire and Ash ahead.
10. Terminator 2D: No Fate
A Love Letter to Judgment Day and 90s Gaming

People who enjoyed Fire and Ash probably also like other films by James Cameron, like Titanic and The Abyss. They might also be interested in his new game, Terminator 2D: No Fate, which is based on the Terminator series.
No Fate is a 2D action game played like the classic Metroid. It’s based on the movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but with a twist: your choices can lead to different endings.
Players could experience No Fate by following the same storyline as Judgment Day, or they could make different choices, like having Sarah Connor kill Dr. Miles Dyson. These alternate decisions could have serious consequences for John Connor and the war against Skynet.
No Fate is easily one of the greatest Terminator games ever made. It’s incredibly fun to experience Judgment Day from the perspectives of both Sarah Connor and the T-800, all with charmingly retro pixel graphics.
9. Aliens: Fireteam Elite
Another Bug Hunt
Before James Cameron created the visually stunning world of Pandora and the Na’vi in Avatar, he thrilled and frightened audiences with the action-horror film Aliens. Aliens: Fireteam Elite is one of the best video games to capture that same exciting mix of fear and intense action.
I’m really excited about Fireteam Elite! It takes place between Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, and you play as a squad of three – either Colonial Marines or these cool military Synthetics. They’re sent to LV-895 to wipe out a Xenomorph infestation and try to save any Weyland-Yutani people who are still alive. It sounds intense!
Fireteam Elite is a fun, cooperative third-person shooter where you and your friends battle waves of alien creatures. The game puts you in the role of colonial marines fighting in a Vietnam War-style setting, facing enemies reminiscent of the military forces from the movie Avatar.
What really makes Fireteam Elite enjoyable for fans of Alien is how it’s packed with references to almost every Alien movie. You’ll see this through different types of Xenomorphs, as well as enemies inspired by films like Alien 3 (with the Runner) and Prometheus (featuring the Pathogen Husks).
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops
Sam Worthington’s Greatest Gaming Performance
Sam Worthington is most famous for playing Jake Sully in the Avatar movies, starring in all three films. However, he also gave a memorable performance as Alex Mason, a CIA operative, in the 2010 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Okay, so Black Ops is the seventh main Call of Duty game, and it’s a direct sequel to World at War. Basically, you play as Mason, and he’s got some serious memory problems, flashing back to the Cold War and Vietnam. The story revolves around the CIA trying to stop this Soviet general, Dragovich, from unleashing a nasty chemical weapon called Nova 6 on American soil. It’s a wild ride trying to piece everything together while saving the world!
The campaign in Black Ops is considered one of the best in the Call of Duty series, largely due to Sam Worthington’s performance as Mason and the captivating mystery surrounding Mason’s connection to Viktor Reznov, a former Red Army captain.
In addition to its story mode, Black Ops delivers some of the most exciting multiplayer experiences in the Call of Duty franchise. It also boasts a fantastic collection of Zombies maps, including popular favorites like Kino der Toten, Five, Ascension, Call of the Dead, Shangri-La, and Moon.
7. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
The Looming Volcanic Presence of Red Mountain
The story of Fire and Ash centers around the Mangkwan Clan, also called the Ash People. They were once similar to other Na’vi clans, but a devastating volcanic eruption wiped out most of their population and caused them to abandon their belief in Eywa.
Both the Dunmer (also called Dark Elves) and their ancestors, the Chimer, were changed by the Red Mountain volcano in Morrowind. The eruption forced them to adjust to living in an environment filled with ash and clouds.
In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Red Mountain feels strikingly similar to the world of Pandora, with its unusual landscape, strange creatures, and an environment constantly filled with ash and clouds.
As a huge fan of Morrowind, one of the coolest things is exploring Vvardenfell and seeing these incredibly unique creatures! You’ve got these giant, tree-like mushrooms everywhere, and then there are the Guars – they’re basically like dinosaurs! But the most amazing part is seeing the Dunmer riding around on these huge, insect-like creatures called Silt Striders. It really makes the world feel alive and totally different.
6. Titanfall 2
The Power of Military Mechs
The Avatar movies are famous for their huge RDA mechs, like the AMP Suit and the Crab Suit, and Titanfall 2 is one of the best games that lets you experience thrilling military mech combat.
Titanfall 2 is a follow-up to the original Titanfall, offering both fast-paced multiplayer action with giant robots and a captivating single-player story set on the distant planet Typhon.
The single-player story of Titanfall 2 centers on Jack Cooper, a soldier who unexpectedly becomes a Titan pilot after bonding with the Titan BT-7274. Together, they fight to rejoin the Frontier Militia while battling the powerful Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation.
Even now, Titanfall 2 is a blast to play, with satisfying movement whether you’re running on foot or piloting a Titan. But what really sets it apart is the heartwarming relationship between the characters Cooper and BT, who become true partners and always support each other.
5. Halo: Reach
A Disastrous Alien Invasion
All the Avatar movies center around humans invading the planet Pandora to exploit its resources and ultimately settle there. A game that powerfully portrays a similar, harsh alien invasion is Halo: Reach.
Halo: Reach is the fifth major game in the Halo series and the last one created by the series’ original developer, Bungie. Set a few weeks before the first Halo game, Halo: Combat Evolved, it takes place in 2552 and tells the story of the alien Covenant’s attack on Reach, which was humanity’s most important military base after Earth.
Reach tells the story of Noble Team, a group of highly trained Spartans, as they fight desperately to protect the planet from a massive enemy invasion. Despite facing overwhelming odds, they eventually receive orders to assist in evacuating civilians and military personnel.
Although Reach shows humans as the heroes, unlike the portrayal in Avatar, it still shares a similar sense of desperate struggle against alien invaders – a fight both the UNSC and the Na’vi face when protecting their homes.
4. Horizon Forbidden West
Aloy’s Struggle With Identity
Much of the story in Fire and Ash focuses on Kiri’s journey to understand who she is. Born on Pandora from an Avatar body without a known father, she struggles to find her connection to Eywa and discover where she truly belongs.
In Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy, the main character from the Horizon series, continues to grapple with questions about who she is and where she comes from. This stems from the revelation in Horizon Zero Dawn that she’s a clone of Dr. Elisabet Sobeck, a scientist who died long ago, and was created by the AI known as GAIA.
Adding to her challenges, Aloy also wrestles with the expectations placed upon her in the world of Horizon. People see her as a legendary figure – a Living Ancestor and the hero of Meridian – but she actually prefers a simple life focused on learning and understanding.
If you enjoyed the connection to nature in Fire and Ash, you’ll likely appreciate playing Forbidden West. Aloy can ride and control various animal-like machines, much like the way the Na’Vi connect with creatures in the story – think riding a velociraptor-like Clawstrider or a pterodactyl-like Sunwing.
3. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game
An Underrated Movie Tie-In
It’s rare to see games based on movies these days, but in the 2000s, they were common. One of the most surprisingly good ones was James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game.
Unlike most games based on movies, Avatar: The Game wasn’t simply a retelling of the 2009 film Avatar. It was actually a prequel, taking place two years before the movie’s story. The game follows Able Ryder, a soldier who joins the Avatar Program.

In this game, players can experience the world from two perspectives: as a human marine from the RDA and as a Na’vi. This allows you to use both advanced human technology like weapons and vehicles, and the incredible creatures of Pandora – something most other Avatar games don’t offer, as they typically focus solely on playing as a Na’vi.
In Avatar: The Game, your choices matter! You can play as either the human RDA forces or the Na’vi, leading to different story paths and multiple endings, which makes the game worth playing through again.
2. Subnautica
The Oceans of an Alien World
Similar to its predecessor, The Way of Water, Fire and Ash spends a significant amount of time showcasing the Metkayina Clan and the underwater creatures of Pandora. A great game for experiencing the freedom of exploring an alien ocean is Subnautica.
Subnautica is a survival game played from the first-person perspective. You play as Ryley Robinson, the sole survivor of a spaceship crash on the alien planet 4546B. The game focuses on his efforts to survive in the planet’s underwater world and find a way to return home.
What truly sets Subnautica apart isn’t its narrative, but the immersive world it creates and how you play within it. Players can easily lose themselves for hours exploring the oceans of planet 4546B, identifying creatures, and scavenging for blueprints to build better submarines and venture further into the depths.
Similar to the creatures in Fire and Ash, the animals in Subnautica are fascinating and frightening, particularly the ones living in the deep ocean – like the truly scary Reaper Leviathan and Ghost Leviathan.
1. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
The Best Avatar Game Ever Made
Currently, the top-rated Avatar game is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, an open-world adventure developed by Massive Entertainment that lets you play in first or third person.
Set mainly a year before the events of The Way of Water, Frontiers centers on a Na’vi character named Sarentu, who was raised by humans. The story follows Sarentu as they team up with a resistance movement of both humans and Na’vi to liberate Pandora’s western regions from the control of the RDA, all while rediscovering their Na’vi heritage and culture.
Aside from the Avatar movies themselves, Frontiers offers the most immersive experience of Pandora and its creatures. Massive Entertainment has done a fantastic job of bringing Pandora to life, with stunningly realistic forests, plains, and floating mountains teeming with wildlife you can study and hunt.
Alongside these updates, a new DLC called ‘From the Ashes’ was released for Frontiers on the same day as the Fire and Ash premiere. This DLC introduces the Mangkwan as invaders, along with several new creatures and enemies that fans of the movie are sure to love.
