The 2019 comedy, also featuring Rebel Wilson, has an interesting history: it’s a remake of a remake! Director Chris Addison took the classic film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and reimagined it with a female cast. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels itself was originally based on the 1964 movie Bedtime Story.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie The Hustle was a financial success. Made for around $21 million, it earned $97.4 million worldwide, with $35.4 million of that coming from the U.S. and $61.9 million from international markets.
As of today, the movie The Hustle has a 13% rating from critics and a 44% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 171 reviews.
In a review for ScreenRant, Sandy Schaefer noted that the movie The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, wasn’t terrible, but it also lacked energy. While the film had potential, Schaefer felt that simply switching the genders of the characters wasn’t enough to revitalize the familiar story or make it feel modern.
