Even though critics heavily panned Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (giving it a mere 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), dedicated horror fans are finding enjoyment in two key areas: cheering on the surprisingly endearing animatronic characters as they defeat the clueless teenagers they hunt, and uncovering the numerous Easter eggs and connections to the original 2014 video game series. The movie is packed with these hidden references.
Beyond the many visual references to the main eleven Five Nights at Freddy’s games, the movie also includes subtle audio cues and voice connections to the original games and their related titles, all created by Scott Cawthon. Though dedicated fans of the popular series will likely catch all the small details and connections to the sequel, let’s highlight the most important Easter Eggs in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
Five Nights at Candy’s & Popgoes Arcade Games

Universal Pictures
Director Emma Tammi quickly engages fans of the FNAF games by hiding three references within the first part of the movie. The film starts with a look back to 1982, showing the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and introducing the story of Charlie and the Marionette – explaining how it all began.
The pizzeria features three arcade games. If you look closely, you can see they’re called Five Nights at Candy’s 3: Candy Fishing, Popgoes Adventure, and FNAF World. The Five Nights at Candy’s game is a clear reference to the 2015 spin-off game, and the arcade machine even shows a picture of the scary cat character. Popgoes Adventure is connected to the Popgoes Arcade series, and FNAF World is a nod to the 2016 role-playing game made by Cawthon.
Kids Can Be So Cruel/Heartless

Scott Cawthon games
Early in the film, Michael Afton (Freddy Carter) shows a group of young paranormal investigators around the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. It’s there they first meet the dangerous animatronic characters. The kids then ask Michael what happened to Roxy, and he explains that she was damaged during a failed attempt to repair and rebuild the attraction.
One of the officers immediately joked, “Kids can be so heartless.” This was a clear nod to a line spoken by the character Mangle (also known as Funtime Foxy) in the game FNAF World during a loading screen – they say, “Kids can be so cruel.” It’s ironic, considering how cruel and heartless Freddy Fazbear actually is.
You Need to Stay Out of My Way!

Scott Cawthon Games
A familiar line of dialogue from the Five Nights at Freddy’s games appears in FNAF 2. The story reveals that Vanessa, as a child in 1982, was friends with Charlie before Charlie’s death and possession by The Puppet. Later, in 2002, the adult Vanessa speaks to her younger self, telling her, “I don’t hate you, but you need to stay out of my way.”
The Puppet said this same line in the 2018 game Ultimate Custom Night. While Vanessa isn’t in Ultimate Custom Night, she first appeared in the 2019 game Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted.
Beakless Toy Chica Pops Up Out of Nowhere

Universal Pictures
As a huge fan of both the FNAF games and the movie, I have to say one of the most genuinely frightening moments comes straight from FNAF 2. It’s when those creepy toy animatronics escape their arcade and start roaming free. They really nailed it with a jump scare involving a taxi driver – the actor is Cory DeVante Williams, a popular YouTuber, and it totally caught me off guard!
When the taxi driver picks up Abby (Piper Rubio) from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, he glances in the rearview mirror and is shocked to see Toy Chica, the scary, beakless chicken animatronic from the video game FNAF 2. The sudden sight nearly gives him a heart attack, and he exclaims, “I need to find a different job!“
FredBear Plush Gets a Shoutout

Universal Pictures
When Abby runs to the Freddy Fazbear Pizzeria from the first movie, she’s shocked to find her friends aren’t there. After Mike (Josh Hutcherson) finds her, he tries to comfort her and suggests she grab something from the Prize Counter, a familiar spot from the video games.
Mike really wants Abby to have both the FazTalker – a brand-new toy made for the movie – and a FredBear Plush Freddy Teddy Bear. The FredBear Plush was originally featured in the FNAF 4 video game and also makes a quick appearance in FNAF World. If they make another movie, FredBear Plush might become an even more important character.
Whistling Past the Graveyard

Universal Pictures
A recognizable melody appears multiple times throughout the movie. At the start, William Afton (played by Matthew Lillard, known from Scream) whistles a haunting tune that foreshadows danger. This same song is used in the original Five Nights at Freddy’s video game, released in 2014, whenever a character meets their end.
The music features a melody from “Toreador March” – a famous song from Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, Carmen. Listeners will recognize this same memorable tune again when Vanessa enters her dream.
Circus Baby Haunts Vanessa’s Dreams

Universal Pictures
As Vanessa experiences her dream, a surprising character briefly appears. In William’s workshop, a Circus Baby doll—which doesn’t move—turns its glowing eyes to look at her as she moves through the nightmare. Circus Baby (also known as Elizabeth Afton) is the primary antagonist in the FNAF: Sister Location game, a spin-off released in 2016.
Dedicated fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s believe Circus Baby’s role is more than just a brief appearance – it’s important to the story. Because of William and Elizabeth Afton’s connection to the Missing Children Incident, some fans theorize that Elizabeth actually died before the incident, and that this event allowed William to discover how animatronics can be possessed.
Shadow Bonnie Lights Up the Screen

Universal Pictures
One of the most frightening hidden details in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 happens incredibly fast. While the security guard, Mike, investigates the original pizzeria and its dangerous animatronics, he walks down a tense, shadowy hallway. If you look closely when he shines his flashlight, a scary, grinning face – Shadow Bonnie – quickly appears in the background. Its glowing white eyes, open mouth, and sharp teeth are guaranteed to give players a chill.
Shadow Bonnie, also called RXQ, is a shadowy, mysterious version of Toy Bonnie. It causes the game to crash in FNAF 2 and appears as an enemy in the minigames of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. Many players try to catch a glimpse of this quick appearance, and those who have say it’s the most frightening part of the game.
The Mysterious Music Box

Universal Pictures
A hidden message within the locked music box from Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is now understood, and it’s considered one of the most important clues in the movie. In the FNAF 4 game, the box appears at the end of Night 7, accompanied by a note that says, “Some things are best left forgotten, for now.”
The mysterious box from Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, released in 2015, has never reappeared, and its contents remain unknown. This has fueled ten years of fan speculation and theories. But now, we don’t have to guess anymore.
As Vanessa falls into a dream, she finds a box in a cupboard that strongly resembles the one from Five Nights at Freddy’s 4. Inside, she discovers unsettling items like a bag of marbles, a mirror, a notebook, and a toy airplane that once belonged to Garrett, Mike’s brother who was kidnapped. These objects are disturbing mementos that William Afton collected and treasured as trophies in the game.
Cassette Man’s Post-Credits Cameo

Universal Pictures
Those who watch the credits to the very end are rewarded with a hidden scene. In it, Mike gets a tape from Henry Emily (Skeet Ulrich) who warns him that he has important information about William.
Henry is a key villain in Five Nights at Freddy’s 6: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Simulator, often called “Cassette Man” because he communicates through audio recordings. While he only appears as a voice on a cassette tape within the game, this detail hints that Henry could have a larger part in future FNAF movies.
