This review connects the ability to forecast and diagnose faults in complex systems to a fundamental property called ‘pre-normality’, offering new strategies for design and control.

Ensuring reliable system operation despite faults remains a fundamental challenge in control theory, particularly as systems grow in complexity. This paper, ‘Active prognosis and diagnosis of modular discrete-event systems’, addresses this by establishing a strong connection between a system’s ability to predict and detect faults – prognosability and diagnosability – and the concept of pre-normality within its language. We demonstrate the existence of optimal sublanguages guaranteeing these properties and introduce an algorithm for computing modular supervisors that enforce both prognosability and diagnosability in distributed architectures. This technique constructs a combined deterministic finite automaton (DFA) from individual DFAs, each representing a component of the larger system. By representing interactions as synchronization – requiring components to act in concert – the resulting product DFA accurately models the combined behavior. Crucially, this approach isn’t limited to a fixed number of components; it scales effectively to systems with ‘l’ interacting modules, allowing for analysis and control of arbitrarily complex arrangements.
