Invincible VS devs say they’d be “surprised” if game’s original character doesn’t appear in the show

The mobile game Invincible VS is introducing a brand new character created specifically for the game. While she originates as a game-exclusive character, the developers hint that she may appear in other Invincible media in the future.

I recently spoke with the developers of Invincible VS, the 3v3 tag fighting game inspired by the violent superhero world of Invincible, about their latest addition to the roster: Ella Mental.

She commands the four elements – earth, air, water, and fire – making her a formidable and powerful fighter. Adding to her appeal, Grammy-nominated artist Tierra Whack provides the voice for this character.

Aside from the confirmed return of JK Simmons as Omni-Man, not much was known about the other voice actors in Invincible VS. However, the team revealed they specifically envisioned Tierra Whitting as their latest character from the very start of Ella Mental’s creation.

Mike Rogers, our Narrative Director, explained that Tierra is a true creative force in the hip-hop scene. We recognized her potential very early in the development of Ella Mental. We needed someone with both talent and a strong stage presence for the character, and Tierra was a popular choice who brought our vision to life in the game.

Tierra is a careful artist when choosing projects, so we were delighted she agreed to join us. As a fan of Invincible, she immediately understood the character Ella and is bringing incredible nuance and detail to the role. I’m really excited to collaborate with someone so passionate about building something new within the Invincible world.

Invincible creators had the idea for Ella Mental years ago

Mike Willette, an executive producer who also worked on the Killer Instinct games, revealed that the character Ella Mental comes from a wealthy family and is an heiress to their fortune.

Because she was a dedicated and diligent student, she quickly earned her grandfather’s special affection. This connection allowed her to possess an old family heirloom – a totem with the power to control the elements.

Ella is a naturally upbeat and lively person, but she also has a bit of a dry wit, something Tierra really brought out in her acting, according to Willette.

Dan Eder, the Art Director for Invincible VS, first suggested creating a brand new character for the game. This sparked a conversation with Invincible’s creators, Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, who revealed they’d actually been developing an idea for a character called ‘Ella Mental’ for some time.

Rogers explained that ‘Ella Mental’ was a name the team had considered a long time ago but ultimately set aside. They’ve now decided to revisit it, finding the name itself inspiring and a good foundation for their work.

How devs built a brand new character for Invincible VS

Ella Mental was a unique challenge for the developers of Invincible VS. Being a brand new character with no established history, it was hard to visually represent her diverse powers, particularly making sure the animation ran smoothly.

Bringing Ella Mental’s powers to life visually was particularly tricky,” Eder said. “This was the first time we’d created a character without any existing references – we only had a fantastic sketch from Cory to work with.

With so much happening on screen during intense attacks, we focused on maintaining a high visual quality while ensuring the game always runs smoothly at 60 frames per second.

We at Quarter Up also enjoy a good challenge, so we playfully asked Dan’s team to create a character with four times the visual effects,” Rogers said with a laugh.

So, Ella Mental is a character who started out only in the Invincible fighting game, which is kinda unique. But the developers aren’t ruling out seeing her in the animated show or the comics down the line. Mike Willette actually said he’d be really surprised if she didn’t show up in one of those eventually. It sounds like she might be getting a bigger role in the Invincible universe!

Honestly, when asked about seeing her in future Invincible stuff, the creator seemed pretty coy! But he hinted that he’d actually be surprised if this was the last we saw of the character, which as a fan, is really exciting to hear!

Invincible VS will launch with 18 characters you can play as. After release, a Year 1 Character Pack will add two more fighters, bringing the total number of new characters available throughout the year to four.

Invincible VS launches on April 30, 2026, on Xbox X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam.
