Japan has taken a firm stance against drunk cycling, suspending the driving licenses of almost 1,000 people who violated the new rules. It’s a serious crackdown.
It’s frustrating when you lose your driver’s license – usually it’s because of something you did while driving, or a pattern of smaller issues. But it’s funny, because you actually need a valid license for a lot of other things these days! I’ve found that many places around the world now require a driver’s license just to rent bikes, scooters, and other similar modes of transportation.
Riding e-bikes and scooters without a helmet is against the law in places like Australia and the UK. You could receive a fine and even get points on your driver’s license if you’re caught.
But in Japan, the consequences for cycling violations are quite strict. By December 2025, nearly 1000 people had their driver’s licenses revoked due to offenses committed while riding bicycles.
Japan revokes licenses of drunk cyclists
More than 900 drivers have lost their licenses for riding bicycles while under the influence of alcohol, the BBC reports.
So, the Japanese authorities took away these drivers’ licenses because they thought they were a real danger behind the wheel. Basically, they didn’t think these people should be allowed to drive at all.
Starting in November 2024, a new rule means riders can be penalized for even a small amount of alcohol in their system – specifically, a breath test reading of 0.15 milligrams per litre or more. Violators could face license suspension, up to three years in prison, or a fine of as much as 500,000 yen.

Japan will continue to enforce stricter rules for cyclists, according to the BBC. Starting in April 2026, cyclists will face fines for actions like riding with an umbrella, using a phone while cycling, running red lights, and not using lights after dark.
I was shocked to hear about what happened in Norway back in April! Apparently, a driver purposely pretended to swerve towards a cyclist, and it was all caught on a Twitch livestream by someone named Detoo. It was so bad the driver lost their license, and Detoo even got temporarily banned from streaming. It’s just a really scary and irresponsible thing to do.
