James Cameron is famous for using groundbreaking technology in his films, and that’s especially true of the Avatar movies, which you can stream on Disney+. The Avatar saga is continuing with a third film, Fire and Ash, which will add even more to the world of Pandora. Interestingly, the movie received a Golden Globe nomination for its potential box office success before it was even released – a fact that even Sam Worthington’s wife found surprising.
Details about Avatar: Fire and Ash are still scarce, but fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Jake Sully and his family’s story. The movie is scheduled to release in theaters on December 19th, so it came as a surprise to many when it recently received a Golden Globe nomination, particularly because the award considers box office success. The franchise shared a post about it, which you can view below:

The Golden Globes announced their nominations with a few surprises and omissions. One of the biggest shocks was the nomination for James Cameron’s upcoming third Avatar movie, which isn’t scheduled to be released in theaters yet. Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Sully in the films, reportedly had a reaction similar to many viewers. His wife, Lara Worthington, briefly posted a comment (according to Us Weekly) that reflected this sentiment, but later deleted it. It read:
Box office achievement?? The movie isn’t even out yet !!!
Many agree. Although some critics have already seen Avatar: Fire and Ash, most moviegoers haven’t yet. The film hasn’t had a chance to earn money in theaters, let alone enough to justify this Golden Globe nomination. It’s unclear whether voters nominated it anticipating its future box office success, or because of the impressive visuals it promises. Sam Worthington’s wife isn’t the only one wondering about this nomination.

Disney+ subscriptions start at $11.99 per month with ads. You can watch ad-free for $18.99 a month, or save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. Disney+ is where you can find all things Avatar. View the deal now!
Lara Worthington briefly posted a comment questioning something, but she quickly deleted it after news outlets picked up on it. She wasn’t alone in her concerns, particularly because the issue is linked to future box office results, which aren’t known yet. Others expressed similar thoughts online, for example:
- Box Office achievement? The Movie isn’t out yet. How do we know what the Box Office will be? – war.of.the.cookies
- How? – therickyzegeshow
- Ummm…. The movie isn’t out yet and it’s already a nominee for box office achievement – darsakdpk

Sam Worthington’s wife isn’t the only one with concerns. It’s still uncertain how well Avatar 3 will do in theaters, and whether James Cameron will actually make the fourth and fifth Avatar movies he’s planned. The first Avatar was a massive hit, but it remains to be seen if Fire and Ash can achieve the same level of success.
The mysteries will unfold when Avatar: Fire and Ash premieres in theaters on December 19th, 2025. It remains to be seen whether the film will be commercially successful enough to validate its Golden Globe nomination.
