Critics initially gave Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 very poor reviews, with a low 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But that didn’t stop people from going to see it in theaters – audiences turned out in droves anyway.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 earned $63 million in its opening weekend in the US and Canada, and another $46 million internationally, making its worldwide debut $109 million. This was despite a production budget estimated between $36 and $51 million. The original Five Nights at Freddy’s movie had a stronger opening last year, bringing in $80 million domestically, even though it was released at the same time on the Peacock streaming service.
Okay, so this new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie totally blew up! It actually knocked Disney’s Zootopia 2 out of the top spot at the box office after just one weekend, which is insane. It also set a bunch of records – the biggest opening ever after Thanksgiving, the biggest December opening for a horror movie, and the best December opening Universal Pictures has ever seen. It’s already the third highest-grossing opening weekend for a PG-13 horror film, only behind the first FNAF movie which made $80 million and World War Z at $66.4 million. Seriously, this sequel is a big deal!
Whether Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will continue to perform well at the box office for several weeks is still uncertain. However, its strong opening weekend suggests Universal and Blumhouse might start planning another sequel soon. Unless ticket sales drop dramatically, that seems likely to happen.
Emma Tammi, the director of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, revealed that actor Matthew Lillard believed the movie was frightening enough to earn an R rating. In other news, TopMob recently reviewed Popeyes’ limited-edition Five Nights at Freddy’s Deluxe Box. And for fans interested in learning more about the series, the updated Five Nights at Freddy’s Ultimate Guide Version 2.0 is now available in bookstores.
