Esoteric Ebb lets you play as a powerful Cleric, but be warned – it’s easy to accidentally derail the entire story! Even without trying, things can quickly become unpredictable. Your decisions have a big impact, and the unusual dialogue choices are almost begging you to explore what happens if you click them.
Become a Cleric, wreak havoc, and play like your goal is to make your Dungeon Master cry
Esoteric Ebb is a role-playing game currently in development by a single creator, Christoffer Bodegard, and will be published by Raw Fury. The developer compares it to games like Planescape: Torment and Disco Elysium, and that influence is definitely noticeable. The game heavily borrows from the feel of tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, combining that classic, dice-rolling experience with both older and newer role-playing game systems. If everything works well, it could be another compelling, story-focused game.
In Esoteric Ebb, you play as an ordinary government worker, not a typical hero. You’re tasked with investigating a strange explosion at a tea shop, and the timing couldn’t be worse – it happens just days before Norvik’s first election. Talk about pressure!
You won’t be exploring by yourself! We’ll have a goblin companion joining us as we search the streets, towers, and some pretty strange underground tunnels. Along the way, you’ll meet all kinds of characters – from mythical creatures to corrupt officials. Get ready to deal with political conflicts, secrets, magical surprises, and a whole lot of unusual situations.

At its heart, Esoteric Ebb centers around conversations and the choices you make. The game largely unfolds through dialogue, both with other characters and with internal voices – which are actually your character’s stats like Strength, Wisdom, and Charisma debating your decisions. Everything you do – from social interactions to sneaking, stealing, and fighting – is determined by dice rolls.
We’re like masters of the unusual, with magical abilities that can alter reality. This includes things like controlling minds, uncovering hidden truths, and even communicating with spirits – or people having very strange days! These powers offer unique and creative solutions to problems, going far beyond simple arguments or fighting.
I’ve been playing Norvik, and what I really appreciate is that while combat is possible, it’s not the focus. It feels like the developers really want you to try everything else first! And when fights do happen, they’re not some perfectly choreographed thing – it’s all down to the dice, so you get those same unpredictable, funny moments you’d expect from a good tabletop RPG session.
Yes, Esoteric Ebb is meant to be strange and unconventional. The game fully embraces silliness, dark jokes, dreamlike scenes, and odd decisions – you might even find yourself eating a huge heap of spoiled apples just to see what’s hidden beneath! According to the creator, the goal is to be the most memorable player and playfully challenge your Dungeon Master.

If you enjoyed story-focused games like Disco Elysium, this upcoming title is worth keeping an eye on. It’s scheduled to release on Steam in spring 2026. You can add it to your wishlist now, and follow the developer, Christoffer Bodegard, on X for updates.
