It’s easy to lose count of all the survival games released recently. While I enjoy many of them, it’s refreshing when a new one comes along and really changes how these games are played. In a genre full of similar titles, Hello Sunshine is different. It has the survival elements you’d expect, but one massive, unique feature sets it apart from the rest.
The main surprise is the massive robot that travels with you. This building-sized machine constantly moves forward, and your job is to use its shadow to avoid the burning sun. You’ll also need to quickly grab supplies from various locations and dodge smaller robots as you go.
Hello Sunshine takes place in a world after a disaster, overrun by hostile robots. To stay alive, you’ll have to search for food, water, and supplies to craft tools and weapons, all while protecting yourself from the dangerous sun. Unlike games like Valheim or Minecraft where you build a home base, Hello Sunshine focuses on constant movement and a nomadic playstyle.
In Hello Sunshine, the game uses a full day-night cycle to change how missions work. As the day goes on, the sun’s position shifts, and you’ll need to carefully move around the large robot, staying in its shadow or keeping it blocked from the sun depending on the time of day.
During the day, the game feels rushed. While you can venture out from safe areas, the robot constantly moves forward, whether you’re with it or not. How long do you risk exploring crumbling buildings for supplies, knowing you’ll have to race back across the desert to catch up? You can briefly withstand the sun, but it quickly damages your health. You need to stay close enough to the robot to not lose it, but valuable items or healing supplies can tempt you to stray, putting you in danger.
Even the most carefully made plans can be ruined by small, annoying robots that try to hinder your progress or expose your location if you’re not cautious and ready. Unexpected weather, like sandstorms, can also create problems, making it hard to keep track of even a very large robot.
Each day you make it through, you’ll find a service station where your robot companion can recharge. This is also where you can rest for the night. At these stations, you’ll be able to create new items by recycling the scraps you’ve collected, crafting things like clothes, flashlights, and weapons.

You’ll be able to focus on your own character, but also spend time fixing up and improving the robot. What I enjoyed most in the demo was watching how the relationship develops – the robot initially seems completely oblivious to you, but it starts to respond as you care for it. From what the developers at Red Thread Games hinted at (they were worried they’d already revealed too much!), I think you’ll form a very strong connection with this robot over the course of the game. I’m curious to see if and how the story will challenge that bond later on. These emotional moments are what I’m most excited about, even if they might be difficult.
The developers hinted at a much larger story and world to discover, featuring diverse environments beyond just the desert. They also plan to include both online and split-screen co-op gameplay, but weren’t ready to share specifics. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but you can register for the free Hello Sunshine playtest to try it out soon.
