Total War: Medieval 3 Announced, Described As The “Ultimate ‘What If?’ Game”

Creative Assembly and Sega have revealed the next installment in the Total War series: Total War: Medieval 3. According to game director Pawel Wojs, they’re sharing the news early in development to be open and honest with fans throughout the game’s creation.

We want to share more details about our current projects and the reasons behind them. This is a new approach for us when it comes to discussing the initial stages of game development, but we’re thrilled to have you join us as we move forward, he explained.

According to Wojs, players can expect updates on the game roughly every three months. The previous installment, Medieval 2: Total War, came out in 2006.

So, what can players expect from Medieval 3? According to Wojs, the game is designed to be the definitive ‘What if?’ experience, letting you change the course of history.

Our goal is to create a historically accurate Total War experience. The game world will react realistically to your choices, allowing you to either follow established historical events or forge your own path and change the course of history, as the developer explained.

The developer promised to share more details in the future and stated that the studio plans to involve players in making some decisions about the game.

Creating games is tough, so we’ll only share details about features when we’re happy with how they’re looking. We want to give you an unprecedented look at how we make a Total War game. We know we’ll probably stumble along the way, but we’re thrilled to be sharing this process with you,” he said.

Creative Assembly has wanted to create Medieval 3 for years, but they’ve previously tried and decided they couldn’t deliver a game that met their standards.

After a 19-year gap since Medieval 2: Total War (released in 2006), a new installment is finally in development. This is partly because Creative Assembly now has a more advanced and capable game engine, called Warcore, and they wanted to ensure they had the right team in place to create Medieval 3.

He explained that assembling the right team was crucial – a group with years of experience and a real grasp of what makes historical strategy so captivating. He believes this knowledge, along with the enthusiasm of those involved in creating the series, provides a strong base for building something exceptional.

According to Wojs, development of Medieval 3 is in the very early stages, meaning it’s still several years from release. Currently, the team is focused on planning the game – deciding what it will include, prioritizing features from a long list of possibilities, and figuring out how to create a truly memorable experience for players.

Wojs explained that sharing information about Medieval 3 with fans so early in development might be a little rough at times. Since this is the first time the studio has done this, he asked for patience as they get used to the process and figure out the best way to communicate with the community.
