If you’re eagerly awaiting news about The Elder Scrolls 6, there’s another exciting RPG coming out that you should definitely check out, and it just received a major update.
The highly anticipated RPG, The Wayward Realms, intended to compete with Elder Scrolls 6, is switching game engines. Developer OnceLost Games has decided to move away from Unreal Engine 5 and build their own custom engine. According to the game’s creative director (in a YouTube video), while Unreal Engine 5 is good for many games, it doesn’t quite fit the needs of The Wayward Realms.
The Wayward Realms is being touted as a spiritual successor to The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. It’s being developed by OnceLost Games, led by Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay, who were key developers on the original Daggerfall.
The Wayward Realms Looks Stunning
OnceLost Games’ Switch To Wicked Engine Is A Bold Move
While fans are still waiting for news on The Elder Scrolls 6, players are already getting a good look at The Wayward Realms, a new large-scale RPG. The developers, formerly of Daggerfall, recently announced a significant change: they’re switching from Unreal Engine 5 to a customized version of the Wicked engine – essentially, a brand new engine they’ve built themselves. This announcement came via a large update on Steam earlier this week.
As expected, Unreal Engine 5 proved difficult for OnceLost Games, and they were having trouble getting it to run well. The developers assure everyone they aren’t rebuilding the game from the beginning, and that they’re almost back to where they were with the last version.
Switching to the Wicked engine should boost performance and allow players to run The Wayward Realms on older computers – even those that are around 10 years old. According to Victor Villarreal, Creative Director at OnceLost Games, the new engine is highly optimized, making The Wayward Realms available to the widest possible audience.
Move Over, The Elder Scrolls 6
There’s A New Grand RPG In Town
Everyone is eagerly awaiting The Elder Scrolls 6, and details about the game are very scarce. In contrast, the developers of The Wayward Realms are openly sharing updates on its progress.
Switching to the Wicked engine might slightly postpone the release of The Wayward Realms, but it’s good to have a clear plan and a projected completion date, even with such a significant change. While few games could compete with the expected scope of The Elder Scrolls 6, The Wayward Realms is shaping up to be a strong contender.
