„Greed.” Last Epoch community reacts sharply to new monetization idea, despite free expansion

Players were concerned about the future of Last Epoch when Krafton bought the game’s developers in July, particularly after Krafton announced a major shift towards using artificial intelligence. Adding to those concerns, Eleventh Hour Games announced the Orobyss expansion in September without sharing any specifics, leaving fans in the dark. Now, the developers have finally provided some updates.

Issue of paid content

A major worry surrounding the Orobyss expansion was how much it would cost. Before Last Epoch launched, the developers promised that all future content would be free. However, that was before Krafton acquired the game, and they likely hadn’t anticipated that change.

Great news! EHG has announced that Orobys will be released for free. Season 4 is coming at the start of next year, followed by Season 5 before the end of the year. After that, they’ll release the expansion and the game on PS5.

There’s a slight issue, though. The developers revealed they’re adding a new class that plays very differently from anything currently in the game. The first of these new “Paradox Classes” will be available as paid downloadable content with the upcoming expansion. This has upset many players, who are pointing out that the developers previously promised no paid content.

Players might have anticipated a different approach to how Last Epoch makes money. The developers recently revealed that sales of cosmetic items after the 1.0 release weren’t generating enough revenue for the seasonal content. However, some people are skeptical of this explanation.

What about AI?

Krafton is openly enthusiastic about artificial intelligence, and it’s no secret why – even their CEO is exploring ways to use it to reduce employee bonuses. But for players of Last Epoch, the bigger question is how AI will impact the game itself. Luckily, the developers at EHG have some positive news to share.

The developers recently confirmed they’re sticking to their original plan for the game’s development. They’re currently hiring for many different positions, which shows they’re continuing to build the game with a traditional approach. So, if you were concerned about the game using AI-generated content, you don’t need to worry about that—at least not yet.
