Dispatch is a highly acclaimed story-driven game that many consider a modern classic. While praised for keeping a fast and engaging pace, some – including myself – wish the episodes were longer or that a second season would be made.
What really makes this game special are its characters. From the brooding Dispatcher, Robert Robertson, to the relentlessly positive Blonde Blazer, the quirky team at SDN HQ truly bring the game to life. I quickly became invested in each of their unique personalities.
It’s tough to pick favorites, but we need to be! I’ve put together a list of the characters from Dispatch that really stood out, and explained what makes them so well-written, even with different amounts of screen time. Just warning you, if these characters don’t come back in a sequel, I’ll be very upset with AdHoc Studio!
Spoilers for each character in Dispatch and their pivotal moments will be discussed below.
6. Sonar
“Half-Man, Half-Bat, All Freak”
Sonar is a proud, bat-like character voiced by Charles White Jr., also known as MoistCr1TiKaL from The Hunger Games. He’s dedicated to using his intelligence and strong work ethic in everything he does.
Despite appearing proud and sophisticated – a Harvard graduate who acts like a personified ideal – he genuinely cares about people, demonstrated by his gratitude towards Robert for assigning him to the Z-team rather than Coupe.
He and Malevola are close friends, maybe even roommates, and always support each other, as demonstrated in their special comic book and when they team up in the game.
My main issue is that it doesn’t quite feel right for him to be removed from the Z-team, especially considering his good relationship with Robert during their missions. Also, his unexpected decision to side with Shroud in the final scene makes sense when you remember Coupe used to be a ruthless assassin, so removing her from the story feels justified.
5. Punch-Up
Friendly Neighborhood Ball-Breaker
I didn’t realize how much I wanted Sean McLoughlin to pursue voice acting as a full-time career until I heard his performance as Punch-Up. The character was both heartwarming and hilarious – I loved his kind nature, and his funny moments, especially during the fight scenes and the finale, had me laughing out loud.
Someone known as ‘Punch-Up’ might seem destined to lose a fight, but their incredible willpower allows them to overcome any challenge and emerge victorious. Though they may be physically smaller than their opponents, they compensate with immense strength and the ability to bounce back from anything, making them capable of succeeding in any difficult task.
I was surprised to learn they dated, but now I’d really like to see their relationship explored further in future installments, beyond just a friendly connection. It would be especially great considering Coupe was part of my original game experience.
4. Malevola
Hell’s Favorite Demon
I’m a huge fan of Malevola! She’s this incredibly powerful half-demon who can open portals and swing a giant broadsword – seriously, she can take down anything evil that gets in her path. What’s really cool is that she’s also Sonar’s sponsor in NA and his best friend. They’ve both joined the Phoenix Program at SDN, hoping to get their lives back on track, and I’m really rooting for them!
I really loved this character and wish we’d seen more of her – I’d love a whole episode focused on her in a future season or installment. Plus, Alanah Pearce deserves recognition for bringing so much of herself to the role and sharing a personal connection with the character.
Whenever Malevola appears on screen and interacts with the other characters, especially Robert, she consistently impresses viewers. This has led to strong reactions – some insist she isn’t a suitable love interest, while others are completely captivated by her strong and assertive personality.
3. Invisigal
Maybe I CAN Fix Her?
Courtney, also known as Invisigal, is a memorable character in the Z-team and the game’s story. She begins to show romantic interest in Robert after the third episode.
She initially comes across as reserved but capable of sudden outbursts, making it take a while for her and Robert to become comfortable around each other.
Whether it’s a sweet scene with Robert or small, playful exchanges with Golem while working, Courtney consistently demonstrates a good heart, even though she sometimes makes questionable choices.
Although she can be emotionally reactive and have strong outbursts, she genuinely wants to gain the respect and admiration of others. Even though Courtney struggles with her invisibility powers, unwavering support and faith in her will be incredibly rewarding. You’ll become an amazing mentor at SDN and help her overcome her deeply ingrained self-destructive tendencies.
2. Flambae
Your Best Frenemy
Meeting Flambae at the supervillain bar was a definite highlight of the first episode. I had the option of throwing either a drink or water at him, but of course, I chose the drink – and managed to singe his eyebrows off!
Over time, I really grew to like him at the SDN. He seemed tough and sarcastic on the surface, but he was actually a very caring person. He always playfully teased Robert, because he knew Robert was a key part of helping the Z-team get back on track, and he’d never let him forget it.
Honestly, the best part? He’s such a good sport! He totally forgave Robert and then completely stole the show – and made Robert a little embarrassed, let’s be real – by performing his own hilarious take on Meredith Brooks’ song as the credits rolled in episode 5. It was seriously one of the most unforgettable moments of the whole game!
Man, I was absolutely beaming! Seriously, I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw my final stats – I was actually proud of myself for relying on this character so much throughout the whole game. It felt good.
1. Chase
Keep Up
There was this veteran player we all looked up to, and I especially grew to love watching him play—more than anyone else in the game, actually. But if he knew I called him an ‘old-timer,’ Chase would definitely give me a piece of his mind!
Chase was a close friend of Robert’s father – he even babysat Robert when he was a child. As the youngest member of the Brave Brigade, known as TrackStar, Chase was incredibly charismatic and loved to show off his superspeed by running laps. However, this constant use of his powers unintentionally caused him to age much faster than normal.
Throughout the events of Dispatch, Chase consistently supports Robert, acting as his moral compass. He keeps Robert focused on doing the right thing, even if it means disagreeing with Invisigal, despite our attempts to help her stay on track.
There are times when he’s surprisingly tough, like when he scolds the whole Z-team on their first day to get things sorted. Then, in a completely different moment, he’ll sweetly cuddle with Beef. It’s those contrasts that make him the coolest character in the game. And his save of Invisigal? That was a game-changer – I was genuinely worried, and he pulled it off perfectly!
