The popular online shooter Arc Raiders now has a new competitor on Steam’s list of most-played games: Where Winds Meet, a free-to-play martial arts adventure set in an open world.
I recently got my hands on Where Winds Meet, the first game from Everstone Studio, and wow, it’s something special! It’s set in ancient China during a really cool period – the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms – and it’s a fantastic mix of everything I love in games. Think open-world adventure, action combat, and RPG elements all rolled into one. You can play it completely solo or team up with others, which is awesome. The combat is amazing – super flashy sword fights and you can even use Tai Chi to send enemies (and even animals!) flying. The bosses are seriously challenging – they remind me of the tough ones in FromSoftware games. And the first two areas, Kaifeng and Qinghe, are HUGE. There are honestly hundreds of hours of content there – tons of secrets, puzzles, and enemies to defeat. The best part? It’s completely free to play! I’m already completely hooked.
Where Winds Meet is largely a free-to-play game. While you can spend money on things like a battle pass, outfits, and other optional items, the core gameplay – including all bosses, weapons, quests, and minigames – is completely free. This will also be true for future updates and content. Players in China, who have access to updates before the rest of the world, have revealed that upcoming additions will include new areas to explore and weapons to use.
Where Winds Meet has quickly become incredibly popular. Since launching globally on November 14th for PC and PS5 – after being available in China since December 2024 – the game has attracted over two million players. It’s now among the top three best-selling games on PlayStation and a top seven seller on Steam.

As of today, Where Winds Meet is quickly becoming one of the most popular games on Steam. SteamDB reports a peak of 251,008 players in the last 24 hours, with over 201,807 currently playing. The game was a hit over the weekend, briefly climbing to fourth place on Steam’s list of most-played games, even ahead of Arc Raiders. While Arc Raiders now has a slightly higher player count (207,234), the two games are closely competing for that fourth-place spot. Market research from Circana also shows Where Winds Meet has entered the top 15 most engaging games on PC and PS5 in the US and Canada.
While the open-world martial arts game has a lot going for it, there are a few quirks. It relies heavily on AI to create voices for characters and power their conversations. In fact, one player on Reddit managed to trick an NPC into believing they were expecting a child, which led to a surprisingly emotional reaction. Also, though you can easily ignore it, the game’s in-game purchases are quite expensive – one skin reportedly costs over $40,000.
Even though the game is free, it offers a taste of Chinese culture and development to players worldwide. While the way it tries to make money and its reliance on AI are disappointing, they don’t completely ruin what is otherwise a really good Wuxia-style game.
You can now play Where Winds Meet on PC and PlayStation 5. The game will also be released for Android and iOS devices on December 31st.
