The Expanse: Osiris Reborn dev diary video goes over combat and more

Owlcat Games recently shared a three-minute developer diary video about their upcoming sci-fi action RPG, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.

This video discusses the game’s combat features and a new collaboration: Owlcat Games is working with Leroy Chiao, a former NASA pilot and commander of the International Space Station, on content for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. It follows the recent announcement of the game’s main theme song, which you can hear here.

I’m really excited – they’re making a new game called The Expanse: Osiris Reborn! It’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC – you’ll be able to grab it on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG when it’s released.

Owlcat Games recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at how they created the realistic space environments in their game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Revealed during the Golden Joystick Awards, the developers worked with former NASA astronaut and ISS commander Leroy Chiao to ensure the game felt authentic while still being fun to play.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is inspired by the popular book series and TV show, The Expanse. The series is known for its realistic science fiction, grounded in actual scientific principles. To make the game’s depiction of space travel as authentic and enjoyable as possible, the developers at Owlcat worked with former NASA pilot and International Space Station commander Leroy Chiao. He shared his firsthand experience of what it’s like to live, move, and eat in space. For instance, astronauts often prefer spicy food to combat the loss of taste that occurs during long space missions, and this detail is reflected in the game with characters craving hot and flavorful dishes!

To make the game more fun, the developers sometimes had to simplify how space travel works compared to real life. For example, real astronauts use ropes to stay connected when they go outside spacecraft, but that would have been awkward to control in a game. So, they added magnetic boots instead, which were easier for players to use.

The challenges of zero-gravity also extended to combat design. Guns behave differently in space – things like bullet trajectory and kickback don’t work the same way they do on Earth, and space is nearly silent. Because satisfying sound effects and weapon feedback are crucial for a good gaming experience, the developers needed to find a solution. They made the game’s sound muffled, but players still receive feedback through vibrations, their character’s breathing, and radio communication.

Stay tuned for more information about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn in the future.

The game The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is coming to PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG, as well as to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Players can now add it to their wishlist.
