Coffee Chats no.8 w/ Arden Cho & May Hong

Cho & Hong are still processing KPop Demon Hunters’ success

I have to admit, I almost missed KPop Demon Hunters when it landed on Netflix in June – the marketing was pretty low-key. But wow, things changed fast! Suddenly, everywhere I went, I was hearing “Golden” – in the supermarket, in cars… it was inescapable! My friend Hong is still hoping to hear the soundtrack naturally, but me? I can’t escape it at all!

I’ve noticed something strange – everyone keeps telling me this song is playing everywhere, but I haven’t heard it once, not even in public places like stores.

It’s amazing! Everywhere I go – restaurants, cafes – they’re playing the song. It’s really sweet. While filming a movie in Seattle, it happened in more than half the places we visited, and the staff would even come over to say hi. But the coolest part was being in Korea, Malaysia, and other parts of Asia right after the movie came out. The support and happiness were incredible – it was just a really special experience. It’s hard to describe the feeling, and things like this don’t happen often in Hollywood.

Arden Cho Tells All About Her Fan-Favorite “FREE” Cover

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I would be honored…'”

The team behind KPop Demon Hunters collaborated to share the creative workload. Cho, Hong, and Ji-young Yoo handled the spoken dialogue, while Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami sang the songs. A month after its release on Netflix, Cho – who is also a singer – recorded a cover of a popular song from the film with Korean actor and singer Cha Eun-woo, expressing her enthusiasm about the project.

Eun-woo is a really big star, so when he asked me to collaborate on a cover song, I was honestly a little surprised! (laughs) I was a bit embarrassed, but it meant a lot to feel his support and see how much everyone loved the idea. I’m so grateful he and his team made it happen, especially since it turned out to be his last project before starting his military service. It feels like a special final gift for the fans, and I’m really thankful he made time for it.

May Hong Reminisces About Her Family Through KPop Demon Hunters

“I think that would be really cool, if I could just have more time with them…”

Hong was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to the United States when she was six. When asked about her ideal companions, location, and drink, she shared that working on KPop Demon Hunters has made her reflect on her Korean heritage and the questions she has about her family’s history.

I think this movie is really touching because it begins by exploring family history. While it doesn’t focus specifically on being Korean, it resonated with me personally. I lost both my grandmothers recently and still have so many unanswered questions for them. I wish I’d had more time with them, maybe just to sit and have tea together.

Coffee Chats combines casual conversation over coffee with a look at what our guests are currently working on. Each episode includes fun segments like ‘Cold Brew Open,’ ‘First Sip Synopsis,’ ‘Coffee Callbacks,’ and sharing our ideal ‘Desert Island Drinks,’ among other things.

Liam Crowley, a reporter and host for ScreenRant, loves a good conversation and finds cafes the perfect place to have one. He shared that while at Syracuse University, he and his friends made short ‘coffee review’ videos for social media. He called it a dream come true to now be creating a full-scale production based on that idea, especially while working with major Hollywood stars.

Rob Keyes, ScreenRant’s Editorial, Branding, and PR Director, explained that when Liam joined the New York team, they immediately planned to create more in-depth and engaging content, including a new interview series. Liam already had a concept in mind, and ‘Coffee Chats’ is the perfect realization of that idea. The series offers a fresh format for connecting audiences with prominent figures in the industry, all while supporting local businesses. ScreenRant is excited to launch the series and work with local establishments on this project.

ScreenRant has interviewed nearly every Hollywood star multiple times over the last 21 years, attending countless press events, red carpets, and conventions. Now, with their new series ‘Coffee Chats,’ they’re building on that history to offer more in-depth, personal interviews in a relaxed setting, according to ScreenRant Content Director Alex Leadbeater.

Coffee Chats was made by Crowley, Keyes, and Leadbeater, with production support from Tiffany Loving, Laura Watson, Jacques Reeder, John Aljets, Leah Nucum, Cesar Garcia, Kazden Risk, and Joe O’Shea.
