Good news for movie lovers! Letterboxd is now offering a way to rent films directly through the app, alongside its review features. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new.
As a huge movie fan, I’m so tired of paying a ton for different streaming services just to watch the episodes I want! That’s why I’m really excited about Letterboxd – it feels like a modern take on the old Blockbuster days, where you could just browse and discover films, but online. It’s a really cool and refreshing change of pace.
Letterboxd, a website where people share and discuss movies, is now letting users watch films directly on the platform – and it’s completely free! It’s become very popular with movie fans for tracking and reviewing what they watch, and now offers streaming as well.
Letterboxd announced on November 19, 2025, that it’s launching a new movie streaming service. Unlike existing services, it’s expected to offer a unique experience.

Letterboxd unveils its own movie rental service for film fans everywhere
Letterboxd will launch a video rental service on its website in early December 2025. Instead of endlessly scrolling through suggestions, users will be able to browse “curated shelves” – collections of films chosen to help them find something to watch.
I’m so excited about these new shelves! They’re going to feature some really special movie collections, including films that have been hits at festivals but haven’t been released to the public yet. As a film buff, this is huge for me because usually, you can only see those movies if you actually go to the festivals – otherwise, you might wait months, or even years, for them to come out!
The Letterboxd Video Store will feature a variety of content, including films that have been highly anticipated, newly restored classics, and rare, previously unreleased titles. For a limited time, you’ll also find special collections called ‘lighting rounds’ with quick-access digital shelves.

Letterboxd’s featured lists are similar to the ’employee picks’ section you’d find at a video store, except curated by many different users from all over the world.
You can watch Letterboxd Video Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Apple TV, and Android TV, as well as cast it to your TV using Chromecast or AirPlay. They’re also working on apps for smart TVs.
The Letterboxd Video Store is free to use, but you’ll need to pay to rent individual movies, and the price will depend on where you are. Letterboxd is working to make films available in as many countries as possible, but availability will vary by location – not every movie will be available everywhere.
The company also mentioned they’re considering offering TV shows in the future, but right now, their priority is movies.
