Brendan Fraser recently discussed the possibility of reprising his role in a fourth Mummy film. He first starred in a remake of the classic 1932 horror movie in 1999, alongside Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo, and then appeared in two Mummy sequels in 2001 and 2008.
Although another movie was initially planned, Universal Pictures decided to start the series over with a completely new group of actors.
The cast is reuniting for a fourth installment in Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy series. While promoting his new film, Rental Family, Fraser revealed he’d been wanting to make a specific Mummy movie for years, but it never came to fruition.
Fraser sees the fourth movie as a personal project – the one he’s always wanted to make. He’s been eager to reprise his role as Rick O’Connell for 20 years, following the 2008 film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The story follows his character, a treasure hunter, as he finds himself fighting against evil forces and ancient creatures after the Egyptian priest Imhotep is brought back to life.
Regarding the third film, Fraser explained the decision to set it in China was tied to the Summer Olympics being held there in the same year Tomb of the Dragon Emperor came out.
As a movie buff, I always find it fascinating how studios try to connect different parts of their businesses. In this case, Universal saw a great opportunity to link their film releases with the Olympics, and it all made sense because Comcast, who owns Universal, also owns NBC – the network that broadcasts the Games. It was a classic example of corporate synergy in action.
Fraser described the experience as amazing and said he was very proud to be a part of it. Now, he’s excited to finally film the Mummy movie he’s always envisioned, and he feels it’s time to deliver what fans have been hoping for.
You know, there was this one movie I always dreamed of making, but it just never happened…until now. After the second film, NBC had the Olympic broadcast rights, so they combined the third movie with coverage from the games and sent us to China. Working in Shanghai was amazing, honestly. I’m really proud of that third installment – it holds up as a solid film on its own. We packed up, brought in a new team, and gave it everything we had. But that original vision? It’s finally happening. I’ve been chasing this for twenty years – sometimes it felt like a clear signal, other times just a whisper. But now? It’s time to deliver for the fans, and I couldn’t be more excited.
Following the success of his first three films, Fraser appeared in movies such as Escape from Planet Earth, Hair Brained, and The Nut Job.
Brendan Fraser saw a major comeback in 2022 with the film The Whale, which won him an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination. He’s continued to work steadily, appearing in Killers of the Flower Moon, Brothers, and Rental Family. Next year, he’ll take on the role of Dwight D. Eisenhower in the war movie Pressure.
Around the beginning of November 2025, reports surfaced that Universal Pictures was planning another Mummy movie, bringing back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Weisz had previously starred as Evelyn Carnahan in the original two Mummy films, but was not in Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Maria Bello took on the role.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are set to reprise their roles in a fourth Mummy film, marking a long-awaited reunion for the pair. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct, and David Coggeshall is writing the screenplay.
Blumhouse has its own version of The Mummy in the works that’s separate from Fraser’s iteration.
While planning for The Mummy 4 is just beginning, it will probably be several years before the movie hits theaters. However, Brendan Fraser is really enthusiastic about returning to the Mummy franchise, and believes this film will finally deliver the movie fans have always wanted, so excitement is expected to build over time.
