The 1980s were a huge decade for Hollywood, especially for horror, action, and comedy movies. While many films from that era are still considered classics today, some that were popular at the time have become less relevant and aren’t as talked about now.
It’s frustrating that many forgettable movies from the 1980s are now considered classics simply because people feel nostalgic for that era. There are plenty of great films from the decade that have been overlooked, but instead, we celebrate movies that don’t really deserve the praise. These ten films are prime examples of that trend.
Fatal Attraction Is Somehow A Staple of Its Sub-Genre
Erotic thrillers are a captivating, though somewhat forgotten, part of Hollywood history. Though less common now, the 1980s and 90s saw a surge of these steamy and suspenseful films, with directors like Paul Verhoeven and, especially, Adrian Lyne becoming well-known for their contributions to the genre.
Adrian Lyne’s films, known for their psychological tension and sexual themes, were popular in the 80s and 90s. His 1987 film, Fatal Attraction, is often considered his best work. However, despite its reputation, the movie – featuring Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and Anne Archer – is surprisingly dull and lacks impact, making its status as a leading erotic thriller quite strange.
Field of Dreams Is Cute, But It’s Not The Definitive Baseball Film
Phil Alden Robinson’s 1989 film, Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner, is a funny story about an Iowa farmer who is told by voices to build a baseball field in his cornfield. Surprisingly, it’s become one of the most important baseball movies ever made. While Field of Dreams is a good film, it’s a stretch to call it one of the greatest sports movies of all time.
Field of Dreams blends a road trip, sports story, and character study in a somewhat unusual way. While none of these parts are poorly done, none are truly exceptional either. Kevin Costner is likable, but it’s still surprising that this 1989 film remains so popular, especially when compared to other movies.
The Goonies Is As Obnoxious As It Is Charming
Richard Donner’s 1985 movie, The Goonies, is a classic example of ’80s nostalgia. While it’s a perfectly enjoyable kids’ adventure film and a defining movie of its time, it relies heavily on fond memories. It has some charming moments and believable child actors, but it’s also filled with silly jokes, predictable plot points, and characters that can be a bit irritating.
While The Goonies remains enjoyable, much of its appeal comes from nostalgia for those who watched it as children. It’s a good movie, but it’s probably not as amazing as some remember, and it’s certainly not a cinematic masterpiece.
A Christmas Story Doesn’t Deserve Its Classic Status
Director Bob Clark is known for the groundbreaking slasher film Black Christmas from 1974, but he also directed A Christmas Story, which is much more famous – and, surprisingly, not as good. Most people who enjoy Christmas movies have probably seen parts of A Christmas Story, and those are really the only parts that stand out.
While many people love it, A Christmas Story feels overly sentimental and manipulative. Despite a few funny scenes and memorable moments, it’s arguably one of the most overhyped movies from its time. Surprisingly, it even spawned two sequels simply because of its popularity, but neither follow-up was necessary, and the film doesn’t really hold up for today’s viewers.
Rocky III Is Excellent, But Too Many People Think It’s Better Than The First
The 1976 film Rocky is considered one of the best sports movies of all time and a classic underdog story. Though it stands perfectly on its own, its popularity led to several sequels. While most of these sequels are enjoyable, many people feel there have been too many films in the series.
While Rocky III has plenty of action, fun moments, and was even directed by Sylvester Stallone, it doesn’t come close to matching the quality of the first Rocky film. In fact, it’s not even the strongest of the sequels. The original movie simply has more emotional depth, heart, and overall impact.
Ghostbusters Is An Okay Film With A Rabid Fanbase
Ivan Reitman’s 1984 film, Ghostbusters, is a classic sci-fi comedy that defined the 80s. While it’s still a fun movie with a fantastic cast, the intense love fans have for it after so many years seems a bit excessive.
While Ghostbusters is a fun movie, it doesn’t deserve the excessive praise, numerous sequels and remakes, or nostalgic adoration it often receives. Honestly, the original film isn’t particularly remarkable to begin with.
Superman II Is A Major Disappointment In The Face of The Original
Many film fans actually prefer the sequel, Richard Lester’s Superman II, to the original. However, this follow-up to the 1978 classic directed by Richard Donner is often considered a letdown – poorly made, confusingly structured, and inconsistent in its overall feel, making it one of the weaker superhero movies of the 20th century.
When director Richard Donner was fired during production, the final version of Superman II feels disjointed and lacks the charm, sincerity, and strong character development that made the original Superman: The Movie so special. Christopher Reeve is still excellent as Superman, and there are some thrilling action sequences, but…
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Isn’t All That Funny
A good comedy should make people laugh, but many find that Jeremiah S. Chechik’s 1989 film, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, doesn’t deliver on that front. While humor is always a matter of opinion, the movie’s jokes and style feel very much of their time and, for many modern viewers, simply aren’t funny anymore. It’s often considered overrated.
Chevy Chase’s comedic style hasn’t aged well, and it really detracts from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation even though the film is considered a classic. While it has a few memorable moments and jokes that still work, the movie is largely forgettable and doesn’t live up to its reputation.
Friday The 13th Shouldn’t Have Kicked Off A Franchise
Despite initially receiving negative reviews, Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 slasher film, Friday the 13th, and the subsequent franchise it launched have become surprisingly popular and enduring horror staples. Many fans who watched the films as children still enjoy all of the installments, including the original, which is somewhat surprising given its initial reception.
Most of the Friday the 13th movies aren’t very good, and the very first one is arguably the worst. The original 1980 film lacks the elements that would later define the series, making it a weak and uninspired imitation of superior horror movies. The special effects are a highlight, but otherwise, there’s little to recommend it.
Rain Man Is A Dated Dud
Despite still being popular with many viewers, Barry Levinson’s 1988 film Rain Man is actually a deeply flawed and damaging movie. Beyond being generally unpleasant to watch, it has significantly harmed public understanding and perception of autism and mental disability.
While Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman give strong performances, the movie itself is fairly average. Their good chemistry does offer some relief from the film’s overly serious and superficial tone. Despite this, Rain Man is considered one of the least impressive films in both actors’ careers, and it’s surprising that it’s still so highly regarded by some.
