The creator of Megabonk announced the game will no longer participate in The Game Awards, despite being nominated for Best Debut Indie.
Megabonk, which launched successfully in September 2025, was nominated for Best Debut Indie Game by The Game Awards on November 17th as part of their full 2025 game list.
The game’s creator explained the next day that the nomination didn’t quite fit, considering his previous projects. The nomination was for a category specifically for brand new, independent games.
Developer says Megabonk does not qualify for Debut Indie
He announced on social media that he’s pulling Megabonk from consideration at The Game Awards. While he’s thrilled with the nomination, he doesn’t believe the game fits the criteria for ‘Debut Indie Game.’
Hey everyone, so Megabonk isn’t actually my first game – I’ve made a few under different studio names before. I’m super grateful for the nomination, all the support, and everyone who voted, but honestly, it feels a little off being considered a ‘debut’ title. There are so many other incredible first games out there, and they really deserve the spotlight. I’d encourage you to check those out and maybe cast your vote their way – they’re all fantastic!
I’m really grateful for the nomination, support, and votes, but I don’t think this is the right category for my game. There are so many other fantastic new games out there, and they deserve your votes!
Thank you again! A new update for Megabonk is coming soon! ✌️

The Game Awards hasn’t said anything about the removal of the entry or if voters will get a new list of nominees.
