8BitDo has introduced an officially licensed Xbox edition of their mechanical keyboard and mouse, available now. These products, the 8BitDo Retro 87 TKL Wireless Keyboard and the Retro R8 Wireless Mouse, draw inspiration from the classic transparent green console of the original Xbox. The keyboard, retailing at $120 on Amazon, can be paired with its matching mouse for an additional $60.
8BitDo’s newest PC accessories are in high demand; however, Amazon anticipates that the keyboard might not be dispatched until between early and mid-February. The delivery time for the mouse is expected to be longer, with shipping dates varying from mid-February to late March. Just a heads up: you won’t be billed for your order until Amazon sends it out.
8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition
$120
8BitDo’s Retro 87 TKL Xbox edition keyboard was collaboratively designed with Xbox and features elements reminiscent of Microsoft’s initial home gaming console. The case is transparent green plastic, while the directional keys match the colors of the Xbox controller face buttons. Additionally, there’s an integrated Xbox button that opens the Xbox overlay menu on Windows. Similar to other 8BitDo console-inspired mechanical keyboards, the Retro 87 TKL includes two large, customizable microswitch buttons modeled after the keyboard itself.
1. The Retro 87 boasts RGB illumination and can connect with both Windows and Android devices using 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth, or a wired USB-C connection. Since all other 8BitDo keyboards operate wirelessly on macOS via Bluetooth and 2.4GHz as well, it’s reasonable to assume that this model should do the same. However, please note that 8BitDo’s unique Ultimate Software V2 is not accessible on macOS, so you may need to adjust settings on a Windows or Android device or manage without customization. In the package, you’ll find a one-month free subscription for PC Game Pass.
8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse with Charging Dock – Xbox Edition
$60
This wireless Retro R8 Xbox Edition mouse is designed to be used by both left and right hand users (ambidextrous), featuring four extra programmable buttons, two on each side. These additional buttons are color-coded like the face buttons of an Xbox controller. You can link this mouse to Windows, Android devices, or even Macs using Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless technology, or a USB-C cable for wired connections. It’s worth noting that while it should function smoothly on macOS, it won’t support the Ultimate Software V2 application. The package includes a charging dock and offers a one-month subscription to PC Game Pass upon purchase.
If you fancy a different style, there are several discounted 8BitDo TKL wireless keyboards available at the moment. All of these keyboards take inspiration from classic game consoles or computers. For instance, the N Edition is inspired by the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), while the Fami Edition draws inspiration from the Family Computer (Famicom). The C64 Edition, modeled after the Commodore 64, currently offers the largest discount and comes with an additional feature – the Super Stick, a detachable arcade stick, along with the Super Buttons. All of these models are tenkeyless (TKL), but 8BitDo also sells matching Numpads, with the C64 Numpad being the only one currently on sale. In December, 8BitDo released full-size versions of the NES and Fami Editions.
8BitDo offers another wireless mouse model inspired by the NES, boasting an appearance similar to the NES controller’s buttons and D-pad. Priced at around $30, it’s temporarily out of stock.
